Tribute to the Victims of 1996.
Adivasi Black Day .

On this solemn day, we pause to remember one of the darkest chapters in the history of Assam — the tragic events of 1996, known as Adivasi Black Day. In the Kokrajhar district, a wave of unimaginable violence was unleashed upon innocent Adivasi communities. Over 200 precious lives were lost, and more than 250,000 people — men, women, and children — were forced to flee their homes, seeking shelter and safety in relief camps.

This was not merely a loss of lives or livelihoods. It was the uprooting of generations, the silencing of songs, the burning of dreams. Entire villages were reduced to ashes, and with them, the fragile hope of peace and belonging.

To those who perished, we offer our deepest respects. Your lives were taken, but your memory endures — a testament to the resilience of the Adivasi spirit. To the survivors, who continue to carry the scars of those harrowing days, we stand with you in solidarity and remembrance.

Let this tribute serve not only as a memorial but also as a reminder — that the pursuit of peace, justice, and dignity for every community is our shared responsibility. May we never forget. May we always strive to heal, to unite, and to ensure that such a tragedy never repeats.
