PETRICHOR – Farm, Studio & Eco Education Centre

About Us

We are a Farm Community, Studio and Eco-Education Center working in harmony with other small farmers of the region to build a healthy alternative where we strive to live sustainably and responsibly with each other. Ecological sustainability is the primary focus of our long-term vision and as our village grows, we want to see this ideal tak

e shape. Diversity is an important element for us and our village consists of individuals, families and an income sharing community. As a Farming community, our design system stems from the regenerative principles of Permaculture and the patterns of nature as we work with it rather than against nature. Besides growing our own food, we harvest honey, ferment local probiotics, preserve pickles, hot sauces, jams and dried products for sale in and outside the farm. We cook the organic food we grow and try to eat by the seasons. We also conduct cooking classes involving recipes that inspire people to eat fresh, healthy, wellness meals that heal the body, mind and soul. As a Studio, we train, design and work with our community craftsmen and women to handcraft merchandise and souvenirs, which are put out for sale as an effort to raise funds for our farm and community. We primarily work with bamboo that is grown in abundance here and is one of the most regenerative plants in the world and other reclaimed, upcycled, recycled scraps and materials that are found in our daily lives, to of course uphold our eco-living intention and to be softer on the planet. As an Eco Education Center, we provide resources for classes, workshops and overall community development for schools and other educational institutions, volunteer groups, visitors, corporate organizations etc through various programs like our Forest School Module, Sustainable Handicrafts Workshops, Cooking Classes, Yoga Retreat and Permaculture Design Workshops. Vision: Our vision is to inspire our community towards being a viable example of sustainable living that strives towards self sufficiency and economic independence, while also helping them bridge the gap between mainstream and rural rifts with outreach, education and exposure to encourage their dreams and aspirations. Mission: Our mission is to foster growth in our community and our environment through education and regenerative systems via sustainable farming methods and the implementation of sustainable creative initiatives.

Glimpses of a regenerative farm and forest garden we helped design, landscape and plant

2 years in, a mere blink in the grand scheme, yet a lifetime of growth and transformation

We've witnessed a dream take root and take shape slowly but surely, a testament to the power of human intention and nature's bounty

Honoured to be a part of this vision with a mission by the wonderful folks at to bring a dream to life

And as always humbled to see how all our efforts have harmonized with mama earth's generosity

Everything we ate from our food forest this week

Salads, a tangle of green and color
Millet bun sliders with vegan cream
Smoked and pickled banana peel 'jerky', strange and wonderful things
Midday pick-me-up of tamarillo chutney and millet biscotti
Broadleaf mustard pesto dip
With aged plant-based cheese (such a good friend to vino!)
Silken spiced pumpkin and chocolate tart
Beetroot and lime smoothies
Food forest pizza, our garden on a crust

And such is our alchemy of the everyday - in the comfort of our kitchen, the never-ending food in our gardens, and the gratitude in our hearts.

Small-Scale Intensive Farms - Why Small is Beautiful!

Petrichor is a studio farm that, through trial and error, has embodied the 9th permaculture design principle perfectly by .

Which, in a nutshell also translates to, size ain't nothin' but just a number (especially on a farm)!

Which is why the small-scale family-run farms across generations and traditions (including our own eastern region) have been central to the production of consistent staple foods while forging bio-diversity and food security by growing heirloom and non-commercial varieties, and building up a store of seeds and making them accessible to growers, while they were at it!

Slow, small systems use local resources more effectively, are easier to maintain, and produce more sustainable results than huge ones.

That’s what we got.

Hope your weekend was lovely and slow, and your circle small and nourishing ❤️

What never fails to lift the heart high is our perennial, beneficial, edible landscape between Zone 2 and 3! (forest garden/food forest, it's got many names!)

We adore hanging out here and taking our residents on soulful, immersive walks in addition to educational excursions.

This is where we find joy in the little things, where the nervous system quietly settles down on its own, finding peace in this simple place of safety.

Nature kisses skin on long warm afternoons, with a special golden color reserved just for wintry January days.

This is where the ego falls quickly, just as gently as the autumn leaves do every season around us.

And just like that, we're reminded to show up as we are, threadbare as we come.

Return to living in our prayers...living in the moment, and in the presence of where we always wanted to be.

Just like that.

The year moving on to the next is a gentle reminder that everything good or bad has an end.

It's also proof that we'll all end up okay one way or the other, even if we still find ourselves mulling over residual perforations in the solid scheme of 'should-be's' and 'would-be's'...

That's also okay because everything we give our conscious presence to will teach us.

And eventually, all there will be left to feel is gratitude for everything….the sunshine and the rain, the bliss and the pain.

And the One bigger than life as we know it..

Happy New Year. That’s all we got :)

Soft & Delicious Rice and Buckwheat Flour Bread!

Have you ever experienced the joy of homegrown buckwheat (Phapar in Nepali)? ** We store ours for year-round use to create delicious treats!

This recipe is one of those treasures. It’s rustic yet fantastic to the taste buds and your gut, also dairy and gluten-free…
..And right up there in permaculture skillin'!

Ingredients:

* 1 and 1/2 cups buckwheat flour
* 1 and 1/2 cups brown rice flour
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* 3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
* 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
* 2 and 1/2 cups water
* 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
* 1/3 cup whole psyllium husks

Method:

* Preheat the oven to 160C and line your loaf tin with parchment paper.
* Mix the dry and wet ingredients separately, psyllium husks go in the wet bowl. Wait for it to thicken for 5 minutes.
* Combine both and mix completely to roughly shape the dough into a ball.
* Bake in the preheated oven for 90 minutes until the surface appears golden brown, dry, and crusty. Work the hollow tap sound before removing it.
* Cool completely on the cooling rack before slicing

This tasty treat isn't just a delicious addition to your kitchen, it's also a secret weapon for your garden! Buckwheat, aka "phosphorus pump", takes inorganic phosphorus from the soil and releases it back in a way that benefits the environment.

So, you're enjoying a yummy snack and helping your plants at the same time?

Talk about a win-win!

Instead of asking, 'Have I done enough to deserve rest?'.... flip it and say, 'Do I rest enough to do my most loving, meaningful work?'

Slow down where you are or come to us.

Even as the year turns inward, the days here are warm and the evenings warmer...by the fire.

Also, there'll be cake!
