Seven Sisters Development Assistance (SeSTA) ‘SeSTA’ is an endeavor to catalyse inclusive and sustainable development in NE-India by building capabilities of the rural communities

Seven Sisters Development Assistance (SeSTA) is an evolving development organisation in Northeast India. The idea of SeSTA is conceived by two young development professionals in the year 2011 to catalyse development activities in NE-India though the process of “Nirman” (constructive development) by working for improved Livelihood system and better wellbeing status of rural community of the North E

astern States of India. Due to its peculiar geo-political position the people of NE region have been alienated from the mainland Indian politically, economically, and culturally. They have been suffering from all kinds of prejudice, discrimination, exploitation and oppression for a long time (V.K.Nuh, 2011). The North Eastern region ranks the lowest in infrastructure development in the country. This fact compounds the problems posed by four specific features of the region: recurrent floods of the Brahmaputra and Barak and their tributaries, Severe Governance Deficit, large scale migration from Bangladesh and finally social unrest and insurgency. In this context it is seen that the region has stagnated economically though most of the smaller states show satisfactory progress in last two decades. The economy is largely based on subsistence oriented farming with a small contribution of the secondary sector and a large contribution from services, significantly dominated by the Government sector. Inadequate cash incomes and frustrations arising out of inability to meet modern aspirations comprise the major livelihoods problems in the region. However, as the region has very little contribution from the secondary sector, the economy is under a severe squeeze and it is apprehended that over a period of time the farm incomes will prove to be grossly inadequate to even meet the subsistence needs of most of the people. SeSTA pronounced ‘Chesta’- literally means ‘effort’ in Assamese. So, SeSTA is conceived to put effort as catalyst for economic development of the NE- India by building capabilities of poor communities, promoting and strengthening their institutions so that they could come out the vicious cycle of contested identity war, poverty and able to participate in the global economy. Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN), a National level NGO supporting the initiative of SeSTA with financial assistance from Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), Mumbai. SeSTA believe that the active participation of every citizen irrespective of their cast, religion and ethnicity with a sense of equality and democracy is crucial for sustainable development. In this process of development SeSTA play a role of facilitator to bring such change with a group of well educated, pro-poor, caring and sensible professionals. Accelerating the process of Transformation from illbeing to wellbeing with equity, with interventions to enhance wellbeing of the poor community of the rural areas of NE-India by strengthening their present livelihood is core focus of SeSTA.

Not everything needs a headline. Some things just need to be shared quietly.
If it stays with you, travels through your hands, or begins a conversation, it has already done its work.

ETOHOP, Vol. 5, Issue 2 is here.
This time, we sit with a simple but restless question- when the world changes, who does it change for first, and who is asked to wait again?

Inside are stories that don’t resolve neatly -
a teacher shaping lessons by torchlight in Dima Hasao,
women in Nagaland negotiating with an algorithm that cannot see them,
and many others moving through change that arrives faster than trust.

Our cover holds that feeling- a small circle of light, and the distance between being inside it and just outside its reach.

To read, please check our bio.

With love and soil-stained hope,

Team ETOHOP, SeSTA

Under Kohuwa CLF, a vibrant vegetable cluster has been successfully promoted in Mayong Panchayat with support from KRSF. From 26,000 saplings across two varieties to eco-friendly inputs like Trichoderma, vermicompost, and neem oil, every step reflects sustainable farming in practice.

With inputs sourced through a local entrepreneur and Trichoderma from Prantika CLF, Tinsukia, this initiative highlights strong inter-CLF convergence while empowering SHG members and boosting local livelihoods.

There is a knowledge that does not need a page to survive. It travels from fingertip to fingertip, heartbeat to drumbeat, like the red border of a mekhela carrying a story across generations. Bohag is not a date, it is the earth awakening, the valley remembering itself. A dhol finds its hands, a rhythm is not learned but recognized. A girl wears not just cloth, but lineage.

This is the oldest Bihu, not of stage, but of continuity. A people who turn silence into music, loss into pattern, memory into dance. Like the Brahmaputra, Assam does not explain itself. It simply flows, blooms, and returns each Bohag, reminding us that true beauty needs no permission to exist.

A two-day Training of Trainers (ToT) programme was successfully conducted with the participation of 24 LH Sakhis, with the support of Tata Trusts. The sessions began with participant introductions, expectation mapping, and a pre-test to assess baseline understanding.

The training covered key areas such as pig breeds, housing structure and floor spacing, health and farm management, common diseases, and vaccination schedules. A special emphasis was placed on African Swine Fever (ASF), focusing on its symptoms, prevention and control measures, biosecurity practices, and the role of the community in managing outbreaks.

Pashu Sakhi kits were distributed along with a hands-on orientation on their effective usage. The programme concluded with a post-test, recognition of the top three performers, and certificate distribution by Dhurba Jyoti Hadhonidhar, DFE, ASRLM. Participant feedback marked a positive and engaging learning experience.
