48th All Assam Inter District Junior (Under 19 Boys & Girls) Chess Championship 2025 concludes

International Master Mayank Chakraborty of Guwahati and Mugdha Keot of sonipur Champion in Boys & Girls Category respectively

The 48th edition of All Assam Inter District Junior (Under 19 Boys & Girls) Chess Championship 2025 was held in South Point School Guwahati from 5th to 7th December 2025. This year the tournament was organised in memory of former President of All Assam Chess Association and Assam Chess Club Late Mridul Kumar Mahanta who was a senior IAS officer of the state and avid chess enthusiast and promoter of the game.
In the under 19 boys category, International Master Mayank Chakraborty of Guwahati clinched the champion by scoring 6 points out of 6 rounds.
In the Girls category Mugdha Keot of sonitpur also scored 5 points out of 5 rounds and clinched the championship.
The top four players in the Under 19 boys and girls category are selected to represent Assam in the upcoming National Junior Chess Championship to be held in Jamshedpur Jharkhand from 16 to 24 December 2025. The tournament was held under the supervision of International Arbiter Biswajit Bharadwaj as the chief Arbiter. He was assisted by Senior National Arbiter Nandan Buragohain of Sivasagar and Rezabul Hoque of Dhrubi.
The Prize distribution ceremony was attended by Dr Kavayashree Mahanta,IAS - wife of Late Mridul Kumar Mahanta, Dr Siben Dutta, Vice President of Guwahati City Chess Association and Anjan Jyoti Das, Vice President, Assam Chess Club.
Earlier the tournament was inaugurated by shri Krishnanjan Chanda, Principal South Point School in the presence of Shri Uddinabh Mahanta, Son, Miss Koumudi Mahanta daughter of Late Mridul Kumar Mahanta and host of officials and dignitaries. 14th November 2025
7th edition of Late Kailash Nath Sarma Memorial Inter School Children Chess Championship was inaugurated by Nandita Garlosa, Hon’ble Sports Minister of Assam in the presence of Assam Gaurav awardee Meenakshi Das, Assam Para-Olympics Association Secretary Rajib Dey, International Arbiter Biswajit Bharadwaj & Vijaya Sarma Project Head, Snehabandhan. Altogether 183 players from across the state is participating in this 6 round swiss league classical time control tournament being held at Snehabandhan, Tripura road, Jayanagar Guwahati from 14th to 16th November 2025. The tournament is held every year on the occasion of the Birth Anniversary of renowned author & social worker Late Kailash Nath Sarma

Debendra Nath Sarma Memorial All Assam Inter School/college & Open Chess Tournament 2025. Altogether 124 players from across the state participated in the day long tournament. The Prize distribution ceremony was attended by Smt Sabitri Devi, wife of Late Debendra Nath Sarma along with Ratnamala Sarma, Associate Professor, JNU College Boko & younger daughter of Late Debendra Nath Sarma, Nandan Buragohain, Secretary of Assam Chess Club among others. The tournament was conducted under the supervision of North east’s First International Arbiter Biswajit Rothin Bharadwaj as the Chief Arbiter while Senior National Arbiter Mrinal Kakati acted as the Deputy Arbiter. Nirmali Devi, Susmita Mazumdar, Bidyute Borah and Anubhav Das were the assistant Arbiter of the event. A total of ₹30,000 was awarded as Prize money in the Open event.

NEWS | Durga Puja Pandal in Guwahati's Pandu to Showcase Pawns and Kings

A Durga puja pandal at Pandu will be marked by a distinctive theme, “Checkmate: The Game of Kings.” Visitors will be greeted by the king and queen of the game, while the pandal itself will be adorned with intricate chess-playing elements. The celebration will take place from Panchami to Dashami with an estimated budget of ₹12–13 lakhs.

Organised by Tarun Sangha, the 48th edition of puja will feature idols and the pandal crafted by artisans from West Bengal. Highlights of the festivities include an elephant rally on Panchami as the opening ceremony and cultural nights scheduled on Astami and Navami.

This year, several other puja committees are also planning eye-catching themes such as Akshardham Temple, Harry Potter, The Lion King, and depictions of the Jarwa tribe, promising a diverse range of attractions for visitors across the city.
