In an existing league of several valuable associations, Gram Vikas Residential School, Kankia, has entered into another important collaboration with ‘Aparna Bhasin Consulting’ in order to discover specialities in our students in terms of their artistic and imaginative potential, and to elicit out of them, their hitherto latent artistic and imaginative capabilities.

“Formed in early 2015, Aparna Bhasin Consulting specializes in education, healthy child and adolescent development, and related social areas”, declares its official website.

Under the part of this collaboration, a two-member team from ‘Aparna Bhasin Consulting’ took a tour of our School last week dated 18th of October and installed canvases at all the desks in each of our Classrooms. The same can be seen in the attached photographs to this post.

The idea is that the students can put their raw artistic and other imaginative ideas at the canvases. These canvases, after the end of the session, are to be detached from the desks, to be sent for psychological assessment in order to decipher students’ bent of minds in terms of their academic and artistic inclinations.

This assessment, from the subsequent academic sessions, can help us in designing and formulating the classroom studies from a more child-centric perspective.

The idea further aims at showcasing some of the worthy artistic pieces or drawings made at these canvases, in some of the prestigious foreign art exhibitions, by ‘Aparna Bhasin Consulting’.

For us, this is something a new experience but an exciting experiment too.

A former fellow of the SBI Youth for India, Mr. Shubham Singh, who worked with our School, played a pivotal role in helping our School to enter into this collaboration with ‘Aparna Bhasin Consulting’. Mr. Debendra Dash, the principal of our School, too played an important role in taking care of all the essentialities at School level, after the visit of the two-member team of 'Aparna Bhasin Consulting' to our School.

Drishti Chitra, an art Exhibition at Bhubaneswar based art café - BOCCA: Innovative Approach to encourage Indigenous Culture

25th September, Yesterday was the concluding day of Drishti Chitra, an art show at Bhubaneswar based art café - BOCCA, showcasing the canvas paintings created by our GVRS Kankia students during the last Kalpanadham workshop in April 2019. The exhibition started on Sunday, Aug 25 and ran for one month. The artist-students visited the exhibition along with many dignitaries from the state.

The education for the Indigenous population has multiple socio-economic aspects attached to it. At one side, indigenous people get lesser opportunity to participate in the national education system. And at the same time, there is apprehension with the objective of the mainstream education system and its impact on the indigenous people. It could be strongly argued that the modern education system has a negative impact on the language, culture, and identity of indigenous people. There is a strong fear of mainstreaming them with current education system with a hidden apprehension of losing the traditional languages, cultural diversity, and tribal identity.

At GVRS, we mainly focus on “Innovative Pedagogical Approaches to education in tribal residential schools”. It is a holistic approach to save the tribal language, culture, and identity with quality education for indigenous people. Quality concerns also include the inclusion of indigenous languages and Teacher capacities development in the context of tribal education.

Drishti Chitra, the present art show, is an innovative initiative by the team for showcasing the canvas paintings of our tribal students to the city world. It is a very special event and unique opportunity for the city people to speak with indigenous talents in the appearance of modern art forms.

We want to thanks Satyabhama Majhi and the team for organizing this event. I also want to extend my thanks to Shalini Krishnan for supporting this idea and to make this possible.

GVRS Students' Excursion - Gopalpur Port

Trips and excursions to places of historical interest, natural beauty, etc should be made part of the academic calendar. There is no substitute to experience and the aim of exposure visits should be to enable students to learn through these visits. With this in mind, GVRS has initiated the process to coordinate with offices/places concerned to ensure that our students should visit and participate in activities there.

Nitha, the current SBI YFI Fellow, has worked very hard to make this trip possible. She has communicated with the authorities of Gopalpur Port to take necessary approvals for the students' excursion. The authorities also allowed to provide students' lunch in their canteen.

142 students along with 7 teachers and Nitha Madam have participated in this excursion visit. The main objective of the trip was to let the children have an idea of the things that they are studying in the books and see those things that they are not able to fully visualize.

Students are encouraged to record details of their visits (both facts and impressions). A meeting should be held after returning from the visit in which the experience should be shared with other students and information provided about different types of activities people were engaged in.
