Interactive Session on Chamomile Cultivation and Market Opportunities

An interactive session on Chamomile cultivation and its market potential was successfully organized by the CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat in collaboration with Khangchendzonga Conservation Committee (KCC) on 10th March 2026. The programme brought together 20 farmers and entrepreneurs from Yuksam and Tashiding GPUs to explore new opportunities in medicinal and aromatic plant cultivation.

The session was led by Dr. Dipanka Dutta, who shared valuable insights on the cultivation techniques, medicinal value, and market demand of Chamomile. Participants learned about the plant’s well-known anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and calming properties, widely used in herbal teas, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic products.

Experts highlighted the growing global demand for organic herbal products, noting that Chamomile is increasingly becoming an important commercial crop. Farmers were also introduced to the value addition potential through Blue Chamomile essential oil, which has strong demand in fragrance and pharmaceutical industries.

Given the temperate climatic conditions of Yuksam and Tashiding, the region has strong potential for producing high-quality Chamomile flowers with superior oil content. Discussions also covered organic pest management, access to quality planting materials, and possibilities of cluster-based marketing and buy-back linkages to ensure fair prices for farmers.

The programme concluded with a roadmap to establish pilot Chamomile cultivation plots in the Yuksam–Tashiding belt, paving the way for new livelihood opportunities and strengthening sustainable floriculture initiatives in the region.
Through the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Aroma Mission, such initiatives aim to promote aromatic crops, rural entrepreneurship, and sustainable income generation for farmers across the North-Eastern region of India.

Yuksam, Gyalshing District, March 10, 2026:
The Khangchendzonga Conservation Committee (KCC), based in Yuksam, organized a training program on Chamomile cultivation for farmers of the Yuksam–Tashiding–Gyalshing District. The initiative was conducted in collaboration with the CSIR–North East Institute of Science and Technology (CSIR-NEIST), Jorhat, and SENCCO-Gerethang, with the objective of promoting high-value medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) in the region.

Farmers and entrepreneurs from the Yuksam-Dubdi and Gerethang-Labing GPU areas participated in the program, which introduced Chamomile as a promising crop well-suited to the temperate climate of West Sikkim.

Dr. Dipankar Dutta from CSIR-NEIST highlighted Chamomile’s diverse applications in medicinal products, cosmetics, herbal teas, skincare, and essential oils. He emphasized that Chamomile has evolved from a niche product into a globally sought-after commodity, driven by rising demand for organic herbal supplements and caffeine-free beverages. The premium Blue Chamomile Essential Oil was noted for its high market value in pharmaceuticals and fragrances.

Participants engaged in discussions on:
- Sourcing high-quality planting material
- Organic pest management techniques
- Collective marketing strategies to maximize benefits

CSIR-NEIST assured support in providing quality seeds and saplings, while organizers encouraged farmers to form clusters for stronger bargaining power and fair farm-gate pricing under the CSIR Floriculture Mission.

Chamomile’s hardy nature, low water requirements, and compatibility with existing farming systems make it an ideal fit for local conditions. The program concluded with optimism that Chamomile could become a sustainable livelihood option, boosting community incomes while supporting conservation efforts in the Khangchendzonga region.

Participants received Chamomile saplings and seeds to begin cultivation. The program was chaired by KCC Advisory Shri Kinzong Sharap Bhutia, who highlighted the opportunities of Chamomile farming. He assured farmers of future support in marketing, packaging, and product development, and urged them to leverage Sikkim’s organic status to position Chamomile as a premium product in both national and international markets.

Empowering Yuksam’s orchards, one tree at a time 🍎🌱

On 25th February 2026, Khangchendzonga Conservation Committee (KCC), Yuksam organized a High-Density Apple Farming Training under the DST-SEED project in the fringe villages of Khangchendzonga National Park.

Twenty farmers from Yuksam, Nesha, and Tsong came together with one shared goal — to learn modern techniques that can improve productivity and strengthen their livelihoods.

The session, led by Mrs. Anamika Kharka (Project Associate), focused on high-density apple varieties grafted on M9 rootstock.
Farmers learned about proper spacing, pit preparation, graft care, and the importance of staking for healthy plant growth.

The best part? The learning didn’t stop in the classroom. It continued in the field with hands-on training — and each farmer received apple saplings to plant in their own orchards.

This initiative is more than just a training program. It is a step toward reviving Yuksam’s apple heritage, improving incomes, and building a stronger, sustainable future for our farming communities.
Together, we grow. 🌿🍎
