| SCEXCLUSIVE

Gangtok, October 10: Amidst misleading social media claims suggesting that Sikkim remains closed to tourists following recent natural disruptions, tourism stakeholders across the state have come together to assert that Sikkim is very much open, safe, and welcoming for visitors.

Led by Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS) under its President Phumpi Bhutia, a gathering of tourism representatives from various associations was held to collectively address the growing misinformation that has led to unnecessary cancellations and panic among prospective visitors.

The initiative, graced by Chairperson of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, Sonam Norgay Lachungpa, aimed to reassure travelers and restore confidence in Sikkim’s tourism sector.

Stakeholders visited popular tourist zones and personally interacted with visiting travelers to get a firsthand understanding of their experience. Tourists from across the country expressed that they faced little to no difficulty in reaching Gangtok or other destinations, and that their trips were going smoothly.

Many shared that they were enjoying Sikkim’s pristine beauty, cultural warmth, and unmatched hospitality, highlighting that the situation on the ground was far from the negative portrayal circulating online.

“Sikkim is open for tourists and safe to travel. All destinations are accessible except Gurudongmar Lake, which remains temporarily restricted. The state continues to welcome visitors with open arms,”
said a tourism promoter and member of TAAS, emphasizing the importance of dispelling misinformation through firsthand engagement.

The misleading “closure” narrative on social media, according to stakeholders, has led to a wave of unnecessary cancellations and financial strain for local travel agencies, hoteliers, and service providers who rely heavily on tourism.

The misinformation, they noted, undermines the recovery efforts of hundreds of local entrepreneurs working tirelessly to revive the tourism economy.

While Sikkim remains open and operational, National Highway 10 (NH-10)—the primary lifeline connecting Sikkim to Siliguri—has continued to pose challenges for commuters due to intermittent landslides and roadblocks, particularly around Leekhu Bhir and Rangpo. Although authorities are working round-the-clock to ensure traffic movement, temporary disruptions have caused delays and discomfort for travelers.

Tourism representatives have urged central agencies to prioritize the permanent stabilization of NH-10, stressing that Sikkim’s economy depends almost entirely on this corridor. “The safety and comfort of tourists rely heavily on road connectivity,” said another stakeholder, adding that urgent, long-term solutions are needed to ensure reliable access year-round.

Tourism bodies have also appealed to travelers to book their trips through registered travel agencies to avoid fraud and misinformation.

The collective effort by Sikkim’s tourism fraternity reflects a shared determination to protect the state’s reputation and ensure that visitors continue to experience the magic, peace, and beauty that the Himalayas have to offer.
