કેહવાય છે કે બ્રાહ્મણો પૈકીના જેઓ ઉત્તર ભારતમાં બ્રહ્માવર્ત પ્રદેશમાં સરસ્વતી નદીના ઉત્તર કાંઠા પર વસ્યા તેઓ ઔદીચ્ય બ્રાહ્મણો (પંચ દ્રાવિડ) કેહવાયા અને જે દક્ષિણ કિનારા પર વસ્યા તેઓ પ્રાચ્ય (પંચ-ગૌs) કેહવાયા. ત્યાર પછી ઔદીચ્ય બ્રાહ્મણો માં ઘણા વિભાજન થયા.
