Somaiya Gujarat Trust, is an exciting new institute of education for traditional artisans of Kutch. Building the design education program developed by Founder Director Judy Frater into an institute, Somaiya Kala Vidya will be the first of a number of institutes integrated into a larger institution of higher education on an expansive site outside Adipur, near Mundra and Gandhidham hubs. Somaiya Kala Vidya is partially supported by Somaiya Vidyavihar, Mumbai.

A glimpse into our 5-day Mobile Photography and Videography Workshop at SKV!

Organised especially for our alumni and current students, the workshop came from a growing interest among artisans to learn these skills and use them to improve their social media marketing.

Led by Akash Tiwari , photographer and filmmaker from Mumbai, the workshop was fun, interactive, hands-on and creative. Participants explored natural and artificial light at different times of the day, experimented with textures, composition and product photography, and learned the basics of filmmaking, interviews, stop-motion and more.

From morning light to late-night experiments, it was five days of learning by doing, trying new things and looking at their work through a different lens!

Somaiya Kala Vidya X Antaran | Kamrup, Assam

We are beginning a new journey with Antaran through an Artisan Enterprise Management Training project across seven of their locations. The first workshop was recently completed in Kamrup, Assam, with women weaver entrepreneurs.

The 12-day workshop was conducted in two groups of 16 artisans each and focused on four key areas:

Production & Inventory Management
Business Communication
Financial & Legal Literacy
Digital Marketing & Photography

The aim was to help artisans understand their product, process, business and finance better, identify the right markets, communicate with buyers, and build stronger enterprises that can get better value for their work.

The workshop was led by our Director, Nish*t , along with Purushottam bhai, an SKV graduate and artisan designer, as a mentor.

A special thanks to Gaurab for taking the photography module with great motivation and involvement, and for helping the artisans develop a new lens to showcase their work and take it to the world.

This is the beginning of a new kind of learning journey for us, and we look forward to continuing this journey with the other locations.

Over five days, our SKV alumni artisans came together to learn how to better understand, document, organise and preserve their textile collections.
From recognising the value and stories behind a textile to creating identification systems and documenting collections digitally, the participants explored different aspects of textile archiving.

The workshop also focused on practical ways to care for textiles, including safe handling, folding, rolling, packing and storage. Participants brought textiles from their personal collections and applied their learning directly to these pieces.

Through hands-on activities and discussions, the workshop encouraged participants to look at their textiles not just as objects, but as carriers of stories, traditions, skills and heritage.

Thank you to Dr. Garvita Sharma for leading this insightful workshop and sharing her knowledge with our SKV alumni artisans.

A Day to Remember !

Our Mens Design Class recently presented the work they have developed over the past few months to an esteemed jury panel- comprising of Kamayani Jalan, Latha Tummuru Latha Tummuru , Savitha Suri Savitha Suri , Neelima Hasija Neelima Hasija , and Tanveen Ratti ChippiWara .

From ideas and explorations to finished pieces, it was a wonderful opportunity for the students to share their work, hear different perspectives, and reflect on what they’ve learnt and created.

The Mens Design Class was joined by the Womens BMA (Business and Management for Artisans) class Satt Baayu , and the Pattern Making class, who also presented their work and learnings to the panel.

With their exhibitions just around the corner, these interactions gave our students a glimpse into presenting their work in a real-world setting. We can’t wait to see where they take it next !

This National Handloom day, we celebrate the next-generation weavers who are carrying their traditions forward.

These women Artisan-Designers have completed the Design course and have successful brands and businesses of their own. They are now pursuing the BMA (Business and Management for Artisans) course to further their craft businesses. They are also Co-Founders of Satt Baayu a women-led craft collective, soon to conduct their first exhibition independently.

This National Handloom Day, we celebrate the next-generation weavers who are carrying their traditions forward.
Through the Design course at Somaiya Kala Vidya, these weavers are building on generations of inherited knowledge, while exploring new ideas, developing their own design language, and creating products for contemporary markets.

Merchandising & Presentation – the final module of the Design Course.

The module was conducted in two parts: Branding & Merchandising, led by , and Display & Presentation, led by Vasundhara

In the first part, students developed their brand identity by working on their brand name, story, logo, visiting cards, portfolio, and catalogue. The module also included a professional photoshoot of their collections, helping them document and present their work.

In the second part, students explored how to display their collections in a way that reflected their brand language and theme. Using simple props and thoughtful styling, they created displays and learned how to present and communicate their work with clarity and confidence.

The module concluded with a Family Jury, where students presented their work to both the jury panel and their family members. It was an opportunity to reflect on their journey, receive feedback and insights, and celebrate everything they had accomplished over the course.

Collection Development - the fifth module of the Design Course.

"Concept aur theme toh bana liya tha, par usko collection mein kaise le kar jaana hai aur products mein apni story kaise dikhani hai, woh iss class mein samajh aaya," shared one of the students.

Led by Zalak, with co-faculty Parul, permanent faculty Prakash Bhai, and mentor Rajesh, this module built on the concepts developed in the previous course, helping students translate their themes into cohesive collections.

Students learned basic machine stitching, quality and finishing from Rahul Bhai, along with hand embroidery and hand-finishing techniques from Sajanu Ben and Geeta Ben.

Based on their theme and client understanding, they chose the type of collection they wanted to create, explored motif placements for different products, and developed their ideas through small- and full-scale layouts before executing them in their craft.

Four students from Anant National University, Ahmedabad, supported the class with layouts and patterns, while the Pattern Making & Garment Construction students supported with pattern making and test fits for their collections.

The module concluded with a jury presentation, where Amar Bhai, Kishan Bhai, Sohel Bhai, and Javed Bhai shared valuable feedback and guidance.
