Our Story
I started with seven students under the shade of an Arjun tree. We began by hanging an alphabet chart on the trunk. There were some flat stones lying around on which the first seven students sat, and I sat on a three legged bench. The class began as usual with AA se Anaar ( the first Hindi alphabet). Interestingly a pig with a line of piglets trailing behind were the first to visit the school. (It was a wild fenceless park in Sector 21-A.) Stray Dogs joined later. They kept the school, company throughout . Next day there was another visitor - a cow who found a clean patch of ground under our Arjun Tree, a welcome spot to use as a toilet! She made it a habit to come every day. Together we cleaned the area every day. The alphabet chart threatened to fly away with every gust of wind and people stared as they passed us by. May is a hot month, but under the shade of our dear tree, it was nice and cool. I'll never forget the first day. The school has moved to different locations over the last ten years but we are still in a public park with nearly 230 students. Another location was found in Sector 21-D where we have 150 students getting free education, a mid-day meal and basic medical care. We have touched the lives of many more who were part of the floating population moving from place to place in search of employment .
I continue with our story . Today is December 15, 2017-how the time flies! The school has moved ahead despite the limited resources and lack of infrastructure. Surprisingly we do seem to attract positive forces from the universe. Help comes unasked for whenever we are in need. We started a new school near the Badhkal fly-over. Nearly 120 children living under this flyover in pitiable conditions (in the slum) have come under the fold of free education Prakash Deep School provides. It is heartening to see the change coming in. Passers by stop and offer help-books, stationery, uniforms, woollens, food, you name it- all their requirements are fulfilled. Its God’s grace I believe. From 7 students , the number has gone up to 637.We have sustained the school so far. Our challenging time is now. Since 2010 National Child Labour Project (NCLP) a Central Government led initiative to stop child labour-had been supporting Prakash Deep financially the expenses of salaries of our staff members and the rental for the hired building were met with these funds. However since April 2017, this support has been withdrawn. We are left to fend for ourselves. A number of other NGOs like ours have had to close down. Prakash Deep is determined to go on. After having brought them this far, we cannot let the school ditch these children once again to fend for themselves and go back to the street. -Dr. Savita Datt, Founder
