Species, Nature and Natural Resource Conservation (SNARC) Foundation is a not-for-profit and philanthropic organization that works to promote multidisciplinary research in nature conservation through basic and applied research. Biodiversity is the term given to the variety and variability among living organisms from all sources, and the ecological systems of which they are a part. This diversity,
more than often refers only to the wide variety of plants, animals and microorganisms, but actually includes, also the genetic differences within each species and also ecosystem diversity. Biodiversity is our wealth, and a vital means of sustenance, therefore, it is absolutely imperative to understand that this diversity must be conserved as a critically important attribute of nature. Biodiversity and Natural resources are critical for the life support systems that humans and all other species rely on – from provision of freshwater to shelter and food. Without the diversity of species, ecosystems are more vulnerable to natural disasters, human disturbance and climate change. People everywhere depend upon biodiversity and natural resources for their livelihoods, their quality of life, and to provide basic ecological services on which all life depends. We strive to establish a sustainable future for the planet, where biodiversity is effectively conserved by the people who live closest to it, supported by national as well as the global community. We are carrying out R&D programmes philanthropically to conserve biodiversity and natural resources in India, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science and take into consideration human requirements. The main objectives of the foundation include:
1) To carry out research on biodiversity conservation and natural resource conservation with special emphasis on interdisciplinary collaborative research.
2) To provide support, advice and expertise to our clients on a sustained basis on matters relating to all aspects of biodiversity conservation and wise use of natural resources.
3) To develop expertise through encouragement of research, development and training in matters related to conservation of biodiversity and natural resources in a sustainable way.
4) To develop and implement an array of capacity building programmes through education, awareness campaign, multidisciplinary crossboundary research and customize training programmes for a wide range of stakeholders focusing on human resource development.
5) To facilitate interactive information sharing through voluntary consultancy, content development, publication, projects, workshops, conferencing, seminars, training programmes and meetings involving research institutes, academic bodies, GOs, NGOs and relevant associations within India and abroad where such expertise is available.
6) To help develop India as a regional and international Resource Centre for Biodiversity Conservation, Natural Resource Conservation through sustainable way. Philanthropy plays an important role in complementing governmental and industry funding for basic research. There are multiple opportunities for philanthropy to make a difference, yet there are very few private funders on biodiversity/natural resource conservation research. Private funders have the flexibility to support nascent ideas and early discoveries that drive breakthroughs, and scale up and accelerate breakthroughs not yet widely embraced. SNARC Foundation provides a platform for advancing such efforts.
