CCA, Centre for Cognitive Activities, is the focal point where convergence of all technical and scientific endeavours takes place

Initially the official science club of NIT Durgapur, CCA now is a non-profit organisation comprising 75 odd tech enthusiast students from 2nd through 4th year. Bulk of the extracurricular activities held in the college all the year round are organised by CCA , with the objective of probing the dark recesses of human mind so that the grey cells are stimulated to create , conceptualize and evolve, t

riggering a rebellion of the new age mind against baseless conventions and meek acceptance. Numerous workshops and lectures are organised, thus introducing the students to new vistas in the field of technology. One of the main of all the year-long activities of the club is the convention of the Annual Techno-Management fest of the college, Aarohan, which incidentally happens to be the second largest of its kind in Eastern India. Started in the year 2003, it has been leading the light of instilling a culture of science, technology and innovation among the youth of the nation. With more than 40 events covering all genres of technology and management, Aarohan brings some of the best solutions for the mankind to the fore.

Researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia have developed an innovative method to remove microplastics from drinking water using genetically engineered algae. Led by Susie Dai, the team discovered that the modified algae produce limonene, a natural oil similar to substances found in orange peels. Because limonene repels water like plastic does, it attracts and traps tiny microplastic particles, causing them to clump together and making them easier to remove from water. Microplastics have become a global environmental concern, as they are found in oceans, rivers, food, and even the human body. Conventional filtration systems often struggle to capture these extremely small particles. In laboratory tests, the algae removed significant amounts of microplastics quickly and efficiently.

The approach is also sustainable. Scientists believe the collected algae-plastic clumps could be recycled into biodegradable plastics or biofuels. Published in the Nature, this breakthrough offers a promising, eco-friendly solution for cleaner water and a healthier planet.
