History and Journey of Chound Mata Shiyadhar Wali

Chound Mata, revered as the divine goddess of strength, protection, and spiritual grace, holds a sacred place in the hearts of devotees from Doda and surrounding regions. The ancient spiritual site of Shiyadhar, nestled in the majestic heights of the Chenab Valley, is believed to be the holy abode of Mata Chound, also known as Shiyadhar Wali Mata. Every year, thousands of devotees participate in the annual pilgrimage — Chound Mata Yatra, a spiritual journey filled with devotion, tradition, and divine blessings.

Origin and Historical Significance
The Chound Mata Yatra has its roots in ancient folklore and local belief. According to oral traditions and elder narrations from Kulhand and nearby villages, Mata Chound appeared to devotees in divine visions, guiding them to the sacred site at Shiyadhar. Over time, this sacred space became a place of worship and devotion, particularly for the people of the Chenab Valley. The pilgrimage is not just a physical journey, but a spiritual one that connects devotees to their heritage, culture, and faith in the goddess.

Organising Committee
The Yatra is organised by Shree Chound Mata Yatra Semitte Kulhand, a dedicated committee formed by local volunteers and spiritual leaders. The committee manages all arrangements, security, food, medical aid, and cultural programs during the Yatra.

Yatra Schedule & Journey
Base Camp – Shiv Temple Nagree (Doda):
The spiritual journey begins from the Shiv Temple in Nagree, Doda, which serves as the official Base Camp for the Yatra. Devotees gather here with chants of “Jai Mata Di”, carrying flags and symbols of faith.

Day 1 – Nagree to Kulhand (First Halt):
The first leg of the journey takes the Yatris from Nagree to Kulhand Village, a serene and devotional environment. The first night stay is arranged in Kulhand, where food (langar), rest, and community prayers are held.

In the evening of 25th June, a grand Vishal Jagran (night-long devotional gathering) is organised in Kulhand, where devotees, singers, and Bhajan Mandalis perform religious songs and praise the glory of Mata Chound. The spiritual energy during this event is unmatched, drawing devotees from far and wide.

Day 2 – Kulhand to Trank Dhar (Second Halt):
On 26th June, the Yatra resumes towards Trank Dhar, a breathtaking meadow nestled in the mountains. The journey includes chanting, drumming, and community walking through forests and hill tracks. The second night stay takes place here, where community meals and prayers continue.

Day 3 – Trank Dhar to Chanditop Shiyadhar (Darshan Day):
On 27th June, the most awaited day arrives as the Yatris trek to the sacred Chanditop Shiyadhar, the holy shrine of Mata Chound. Upon reaching, devotees perform Pavitra Darshan (sacred viewing) of Mata Chound and seek her divine blessings. Rituals, prayers, and cultural offerings are conducted at the shrine amidst a spiritually charged atmosphere.

After the Darshan, the Yatris return to Kulhand the same day, concluding the spiritually fulfilling ascent.

Day 4 – Conclusion of Yatra (28th June):
On 28th June, the Yatra officially concludes. Devotees return to Nagree and their respective villages, carrying the blessings and divine energy of Mata Chound.

Spiritual Importance
The Chound Mata Yatra is more than a pilgrimage; it is a celebration of faith, devotion, tradition, and community bonding. People from all walks of life come together in service and devotion, making it a vibrant spiritual festival of the Chenab region. Many devotees believe that Mata Chound fulfills the wishes of the pure-hearted and protects her devotees from misfortune.

Conclusion
The Chound Mata Shiyadhar Wali Yatra stands as a shining example of deep-rooted spirituality, culture, and unity in the Doda region of Jammu & Kashmir. The scenic beauty of the journey, combined with spiritual bliss, makes it a life-changing experience for all who participate.
