KSYC Welcomes Assam Government’s Decision to Reduce the Proposed 10-Km Eco-Sensitive Zone Around Kaziranga National Park

Karbi Students’ & Youth Council (KSYC) welcomes the decision of the Government of Assam to reduce the proposed 10-kilometre Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around the Kaziranga National Park, while acknowledging the genuine concerns raised by the indigenous people of Karbi Anglong and the local communities residing around the Kaziranga landscape.

KSYC believes that the original proposal for a 10-km expansion could have had a significant impact on numerous indigenous Karbi villages and communities in Karbi Anglong, particularly in relation to traditional livelihoods, land use, developmental activities and the socio-economic interests of the people.

Therefore appreciates the Government of Assam for taking into consideration the concerns of the affected communities and adopting a more balanced approach between wildlife conservation and the legitimate rights and interests of indigenous people.

KSYC believes that protection of Kaziranga’s unique biodiversity and wildlife must go hand in hand with the protection of the rights, livelihoods and dignity of the communities who have historically lived alongside the forest and wildlife.

Conservation cannot be successful by excluding the people who have traditionally coexisted with nature. Local and indigenous communities must be recognised as important stakeholders and partners in conservation.

At the same time, KSYC urges the Government of Assam to ensure that any future decision concerning the Eco-Sensitive Zone is taken through meaningful consultation with the affected communities, particularly the indigenous Karbi population of Karbi Anglong.

KSYC welcomes this decision as a positive step towards achieving a balance between conservation, development and the rights of indigenous communities.

Karbi Students & Youth Council (KSYC) strongly and unequivocally condemns the disgraceful act of sexual abuse allegedly committed against an 18-year-old Higher Secondary student by Dr. Dipok Bora, Principal of Deithor Model College. Such grave misconduct by a person holding a position of trust and responsibility is a betrayal of the educational institution and an attack on the dignity of students.

We demand the immediate suspension of the accused, a swift and impartial investigation, and strict punishment under the law if found guilty. No individual, regardless of position or status, should be allowed to misuse authority and escape accountability.

KSYC stands firmly with the victim and calls upon the concerned authorities to ensure justice without delay. Educational institutions must remain safe spaces for every student.
Justice must prevail.
