Women in India consistently lag behind the men in terms of access to education, health care, jobs etc. Apart from the economic and social inequality, women in India are victims of heinous crimes such as, dowry deaths, r**e, molestation and immoral trafficking. As per the latest statistics;

The female child s*x ratio (0-6 years) is 914 per 1000 males
Rural female literacy rate only 58% while rural male 78%
Women employment in urban areas is only 13.9% while in rural areas is 29.9%. With the rise in poverty, many women are forced to work in very low end and low paid jobs. Employment of women in organized sector is less than 8%. Women especially in the child bearing age often deficient in nutrition due to poverty. As a result the number of maternal deaths in India is one of the highest in the world and 87% of all pregnant women in India are anemic. Unless drastic measures are taken to improve female literacy, create skills and capability among women for enabling them to stand on their own feet and care for themselves and family, it will be difficult for India to prosper as a nation. Many NGOs are working at the grass root level to empower women to attain economic participation in order to overcome poverty and inequality. “Northeast Indian killed and victim in mainland India “

Anjel Chakma (2025): A student from Tripura who died on December 26, 2025, in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, following a brutal assault by a group of men. He was stabbed in the head and back after being subjected to racial slurs, with his death highlighting ongoing, unsolved issues of racism.

Roshmita Hojai (2025): A woman from Assam’s Dimasa tribe who went missing in Delhi and was found dead in Uttarakhand in June 2025.

Shreya Ghosh (2025): A Delhi University student found dead in the Yamuna River in July 2025

Nido Taniam (2014): A 20-year-old student from Arunachal Pradesh who was beaten to death by shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar, Delhi, on January 29, 2014, after they made fun of his hair and clothes. His death triggered nationwide protests against racism.

Akha Salouni (2012): A Manipur student found dead in a suspected hate crime in Pune.

Loitam Richard (2012): A Manipuri student found dead in his hostel in Bengaluru, with suspicions of assault

Miss Luingamla Muinao (1986): A woman whose r**e and murder by Indian Army personnel in Manipur became a landmark case of alleged

“Recent Incidents of Violence/Racism (Non-Fatal”

Malviya Nagar Racial Abuse (Feb 2026): Three women from Arunachal Pradesh in South Delhi were subjected to racial slurs, s*xual insults, and intimidation by neighbors over an air conditioner repair dispute.

Arun Rimo (Feb 2026): A youth from Arunachal Pradesh was brutally assaulted in Delhi's Karol Bagh area.

Higio Gungtey (2017): A student from Arunachal Pradesh in Bengaluru who was forced to lick his landlord's shoe after being assaulted and verbally abused.

Common Patterns
The victims are often targeted for their physical features, accents, food habits, and cultural differences, which are weaponized against them, turning everyday disputes into violent, racialized attacks. Despite the Bezbaruah Committee recommendations in 2014, these incidents continue to occur.

The students of Northeast are called chinky , momo , Haka and other distasteful slurs .
It is often brushed under the carpet and not treated as grave offence.
Justice

Let's stand together against violence and hate crimes targeting people from Northeast India. Every individual deserves respect and safety, regardless of their background or appearance.
