REST IN MUSIC - PRASHANT TAMANG, NO MORE
We are deeply saddened to report the demise of popular singer, actor and cultural icon Prashant Tamang. He was only 43-years old. According to family sources, he suffered a sudden stroke last night, and could not be saved.
Born on January 4, 1983, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, to Rupa and Madan Tamang, Prashant lived a highly eventful life. Following the tragic loss of his father in an accident, he stepped into his shoes as a constable in the Kolkata Police, where he honed his musical skills as part of the police orchestra.
Prashant's rise to fame began in 2007 when he captivated millions by winning the third season of Indian Idol, securing an unprecedented 70 million votes and outshining competitors with his soulful renditions. This victory not only launched his music career, yielding albums like Dhanyavad and international tours, but also propelled him into acting.
He made his film debut in the 2010 Nepali blockbuster Gorkha Paltan, where he also contributed as a playback singer, followed by successful roles in films such as Angalo Yo Maya Ko (2011), Kina Maya Ma (2011), Nishani (2014), Pardesi (2015), and Kina Mayama (2016).
His guest appearance on the TV show Amber Dhara and his role as Daniel Acho in the 2025 series Paatal Lok further showcased his versatility, blending heartfelt performances with a deep cultural authenticity.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Prashant Tamang's legacy is inextricably linked to his profound contributions to the Gorkha community.
As a son of Darjeeling's hills, of Gorkha descent, his Indian Idol triumph ignited unprecedented unity and pride among Gorkhas across Darjeeling hills, Terai, Dooars, Sikkim, North East India, and even Nepal and Gorkha communities world-wide.
Prashant's success became a symbol of Gorkha resilience, and fostering a sense of empowerment and visibility for a community often marginalized.
He will be remembered not just as an entertainer, but as someone who represented the Gorkha community at our best.
Rest in Music Prashant, that was your first love.
