REST IN MUSIC - PRASHANT TAMANG, NO MORE

We are deeply saddened to report the demise of popular singer, actor and cultural icon Prashant Tamang. He was only 43-years old. According to family sources, he suffered a sudden stroke last night, and could not be saved.

Born on January 4, 1983, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, to Rupa and Madan Tamang, Prashant lived a highly eventful life. Following the tragic loss of his father in an accident, he stepped into his shoes as a constable in the Kolkata Police, where he honed his musical skills as part of the police orchestra.

Prashant's rise to fame began in 2007 when he captivated millions by winning the third season of Indian Idol, securing an unprecedented 70 million votes and outshining competitors with his soulful renditions. This victory not only launched his music career, yielding albums like Dhanyavad and international tours, but also propelled him into acting.

He made his film debut in the 2010 Nepali blockbuster Gorkha Paltan, where he also contributed as a playback singer, followed by successful roles in films such as Angalo Yo Maya Ko (2011), Kina Maya Ma (2011), Nishani (2014), Pardesi (2015), and Kina Mayama (2016).

His guest appearance on the TV show Amber Dhara and his role as Daniel Acho in the 2025 series Paatal Lok further showcased his versatility, blending heartfelt performances with a deep cultural authenticity.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Prashant Tamang's legacy is inextricably linked to his profound contributions to the Gorkha community.

As a son of Darjeeling's hills, of Gorkha descent, his Indian Idol triumph ignited unprecedented unity and pride among Gorkhas across Darjeeling hills, Terai, Dooars, Sikkim, North East India, and even Nepal and Gorkha communities world-wide.

Prashant's success became a symbol of Gorkha resilience, and fostering a sense of empowerment and visibility for a community often marginalized.

He will be remembered not just as an entertainer, but as someone who represented the Gorkha community at our best.

Rest in Music Prashant, that was your first love.

The 211th Bhanu Jayanti was celebrated by Dimapur Gorkha Union (DGU) and Gorkha Students’ Union Dimapur (GSUD) at Town Hall, Dimapur, on Sunday under the theme “Our Culture, Our Identity.” The day honoured the contributions of Adikavi Bhanubhakta Acharya, revered as the pioneer of Nepali literature.
Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) Councillor, Ward No. 9, Lanutoshi Yaden graced the event as special guest, while DGU President, Kumar S***a, was Guest of Honour.

In his address, Lanutoshi said Bhanu Jayanti symbolises the cultural unity of the Gorkha community. He emphasized the importance of honouring meritorious students and described them as the pride and future of the community. He praised DGU and GSUD for preserving heritage and fostering youth empowerment.
Lanutoshi stated that Bhanu Bhakta Acharya’s legacy reflects not only literary excellence but also a deeper message of service and humility. He urged students to remember that true success is measured by uplifting others, not titles or degrees. “Live a life that speaks for others, not just for yourself,” he quoted in the spirit of Bhanu Bhakta.

He also appreciated the role of teachers, calling them “unseen architects of the future” and lauded their dedication to shaping young minds. Reflecting on the close ties between Gurkhas and Nagas, Lanutoshi said both communities have shared values of honesty, courage, and loyalty, living as neighbours united in respect.
He acknowledged his father, Geoffrey Yaden, for building bridges between communities, and expressed that his own public service role carried the weight of both individual and collective responsibility. He urged Gorkha youth to be proud of their identity while pursuing broader dreams, adding that knowledge should bring growth not just to oneself but to society as a whole.

GORKHAS DEMEANED: AGOSS Files Case Against Haryana-based company for Demeaning the "Gorkha" Community

The Adivasi Gorkha Sanyukt Samiti (AGOSS) has today filed a case against a Haryana-based company Foxglove Lifestyles Pvt. Ltd. and its subsidiary brand, Crafts & Glory, against the disrespectful use of the name “Gorkha” in their footwear product line.

According to AGOSS representatives, an General Dairy - GD has been formally registered today at the Malbazar police station against the company and its proprietors. The action follows the company’s marketing of shoes under the brand name “Gorkha,” a move the committee says deeply offends and disrespects the Gorkha community.

Crafts & Glory, operating under Foxglove Lifestyles Pvt. Ltd. and located at Plot No. 136, First Floor, Udyog Vihar, Phase 1, Gurugram 122016, Haryana, first launched the “Gurkha Shoes” brand in 2017. AGOSS contends that the commercialization of the name not only commodifies the "Gorkha" identity, but also continues a historical pattern of discrimination and stereotyping against Gorkhas.

“For generations, the Gorkha community has been subjected to humiliation—labeled as ‘foreigners,’ ‘chinky-minky,’ or reduced to being called simply ‘brave.’ These terms undermine our dignity and portray us in a narrow, often degrading light,” said a spokesperson from AGOSS. “We will no longer tolerate such disrespect.”

AGOSS has demanded that Foxglove Lifestyles immediately cease the use of the name “Gurkha” in its branding and issue a public and written apology. The group has also urged Gorkha organizations across India to stand in solidarity by registering similar FIRs against the company in their respective jurisdictions.

“This is not just about a brand, it’s about our identity,” said Saghan Moktan, a representative of AGOSS. “We are calling on every Gorkha institution to raise their voices and take legal steps to protect the integrity of our community.”

The case is expected to draw wider attention as it touches on larger issues of cultural appropriation and minority representation in commercial branding.

Further developments are awaited as the legal process unfolds.
