Our Trustee, Dr. Alankar Kaushik, participated in the TFIx Coffee Chat in Shillong on the theme “Building the Future of Education.”

He shared BFFSR&LP’s experience of strengthening the education ecosystem in tea garden communities through a community-led approach that focuses on strengthening local resources for better foundational learning.

The discussion highlighted how local teachers, Learning Leaders, parents and community members can work together to create a stronger and more supportive learning environment for children. Our approach is to build on existing community strengths, strengthen local capacities and work together with communities to improve children’s foundational learning and support their continued education.

Brahmaputra Foundation for Social Research & Livelihood Practice (BFFSR&LP), with support from Roots to Branches Foundation (RBF), organised a three-day Capacity Building Workshop on Finance, Accounting, Record Keeping and Digital & Financial Literacy for girls and women from different tea garden communities of Dibrugarh.

The workshop was inaugurated in the presence of:

🔹 Sri Pronoy Bordoloi, District Development Manager, NABARD
🔹 Sri Shyama Prasad Kulvi, District Lead Bank Manager, Punjab National Bank
🔹 Sri Ashim Nandi, Senior Manager, Punjab National Bank

Sri Pronoy Bordoloi engaged participants in an inspiring exchange on sustainable skills, livelihood opportunities and enterprise development for women from marginalised communities. Sri Shyama Prasad Kulvi highlighted the importance of financial and digital literacy as a foundation for sustainable livelihoods and economic growth.

The financial and digital literacy sessions were conducted in association with CRISIL Foundation, facilitated by Sri Pratim Phukan, Ms. Lanu Washim and Ms. Mamun Buragohain.

The enterprise management sessions, facilitated by Mr. Bhaskar Bhuyan, BFFSR&LP, focused on helping participants understand the business side of their livelihood activities from calculating the real cost of a product and setting appropriate prices to understanding customers, competitors, markets, sales and customer relationships.

Mr. Mintu Baruah, Block Coordinator, Tengakhat Block, ASRLM, facilitated the session on cashbook maintenance and small savings habits, emphasising the value of regular financial recording and disciplined savings.

From skills to enterprise, from production to markets, and from income to financial confidence MpowerHer is supporting women to strengthen the foundations for sustainable livelihoods and greater economic opportunity.

🌱 Building Financial Skills for Sustainable Livelihoods

BFFSR&LP, supported by Roots To Branches Foundation, is organising a three-day Capacity Building Training on Financial Management, Accounting & Record Keeping, and Digital & Financial Literacy from 24–26 September 2026.

The training will strengthen participants’ skills in financial literacy, digital transactions, business record keeping, product costing and pricing, sales management, customer relationships, and sustainable enterprise development.

Remembering Zubeen Garg on Zubeen Divas

Some voices are more than voices.
They become a part of our memories, our emotions, our identity, and our lives.
Zubeen Garg is one such voice.

For generations of Assamese people, Zubeen Da has been more than a singer or musician. His songs have accompanied us through moments of love and longing, joy and sorrow, celebration and silence. His music has connected people across communities, generations, and geographies.

His music has carried the sounds, emotions, stories and spirit of Assam far beyond our borders. But perhaps his greatest connection is with ordinary people with those who find a piece of their own lives and feelings in his songs.

Building Local Leaders. Creating Lasting Change.

At BFFSR&LP, we believe that sustainable change begins within the community. Our approach is rooted in creating and strengthening local resources who can continue to support their communities in education, health, livelihoods, and community mobilisation.

As part of our Education Ecosystem initiative, we have trained Learning Leaders—local education volunteers from tea garden communities—to take an active role in supporting children’s foundational learning.

Today, these Learning Leaders are conducting Handwriting Workshops in local tea garden primary schools, working alongside children, parents, and teachers to strengthen their Assamese and English handwriting and foundational literacy skills.

Strong foundational learning can help children build confidence, engage better with age-appropriate learning, and stay connected to their schooling as they progress through the grades.

More importantly, we are investing in local people as local changemakers—because when communities have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support their own children, the impact can continue long after a project ends.

Change begins at the grassroots.

From Learning Gaps to Community Action

Every child deserves the opportunity to read, write and learn with confidence.

Our recent learning gap assessment among primary school children in tea garden communities highlighted challenges in English and Assamese letter recognition and handwriting. Conversations with parents and mothers’ groups reinforced the same concerns.

But identifying a challenge is only the first step finding solutions together is what creates change.

With support from National Foundation for India (NFI), the Brahmaputra Foundation for Social Research and Livelihood Practice (BFFSR&LP) has initiated a Handwriting Workshop engaging children and parents across 20 tea gardens, reaching 800+ students.

Through practice, encouragement and active participation, we are working together to strengthen children’s foundational literacy and create a stronger learning environment at school, at home and within the community.
