The Common Kingfisher is a very pretty, small bird, slightly bigger than a sparrow, with a bright turquoise blue body and orange coloured underparts. It is commonly found along rivers, lakes or small water bodies where it often perches very quietly. It often surprises one with a spectacular flash of turquoise blue while it dives to hunt fish or suddenly takes off. The biggest giveaway is its shrill whistle-like call which alerts birders of its presence in the vicinity!
