Clean Upper Dharamshala Programme

Clean Upper Dharamshala Programme As Tibetan refugees, we consider it our duty to keep this beautiful place clean and tidy. The area has a Tibetan population of over 15,000 Tibetan refugees.

Since 1960, McLeod Ganj, the hill station of Upper Dharamshala in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh has been the home of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the seat of the Tibetan exile government. Approximately 47,000 tourists visit Upper Dharamshala every year. Until the 1980s, the waste produced in Upper Dharamshala was almost entirely biodegradable. During that decade, the popula

tion as well as numbers of tourists increased, as did levels of income and consumption. More and more goods produced outside the area began to flow into Upper Dharamshala, accompanied by plastics and other non-biodegradable packaging. Lack of a functional waste management system led to increasing levels of garbage accumulating in towns and on hillsides around Upper Dharamshala, polluting the natural environment.

On World Environment Day (05.06.2024), the CUDP, alongside other NGOs in Dharamshala, marked the occasion by cleaning the Bhagsu Nath riverside. As temperatures continue to climb each year, it's crucial to remember that we have only one planet. Let's work together to save it. Even if not for others, at least for ourselves
