Ice stupas are artificial glaciers developed in the cold desert regions of Ladakh to store winter water. They were pioneered by Sonam Wangchuk in 2014. These cone-shaped ice structures are formed by spraying water into freezing winter air. Ice stupas can reach heights of over 20 meters and melt slowly during spring. The stored water is used for irrigation in villages facing water scarcity. They help farmers grow crops during dry months and reduce the impact of glacial retreat caused by climate change.
