On this day in 1905, Kangra in Himachal Pradesh was shaken by a major earthquake that led to the death of nearly 20,000 people. To commemorate this day, every year organize annual school safety preparedness drill.

This year several schools participated across the Himachal Pradesh along with the District Disaster Management Authorities.

Our colleague .shi.ta_ had the opportunity to revisit her school and witness the drill which took place during rains this year.

Today is the 15th anniversary of the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. The disaster showed how powerful natural hazards can be, but also highlighted the importance of preparedness, early warning systems, and resilient communities.

A reminder that while disasters cannot always be prevented, their impacts can be reduced through preparedness and collective action.

Building resilience must include everyone

In continuation to our work with the we recently conducted a 4-day intensive training program on Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DiDRR) at Donyi Polo School in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh SDMA.
The program focused on strengthening disaster preparedness in institutions serving persons with disabilities, while also ensuring hands-on participation of persons with disabilities themselves. Through interactive sessions, practical exercises, and on-ground simulations, participants explored how disaster risk reduction measures can be made truly inclusive.
As an outcome of the training:
1. The school successfully developed its School Disaster Management Plan
2. Two emergency drills were conducted to practice evacuation and response procedures
3. Staff and students gained practical skills to respond safely during emergencies

Inclusive preparedness is essential for building safer communities

26 January marks 25 years since the Bhuj Earthquake (2001).
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Kutch, Gujarat, causing over 13,000 deaths and severe damage across Bhuj.
The event reshaped India’s disaster management framework, yet the seismic risk remains high. A major portion of India lies in moderate to high seismic zones, and rapid urbanisation continues to increase our vulnerability.
Earthquake damage and losses are driven primarily by structural and non-structural vulnerabilities.
Earthquakes are inevitable. Losses are not, hence Preparedness remains the most effective risk reduction strategy.

At GeoHazards Society, we believe that no community is truly resilient unless every individual is included.

Across India, we are working closely with institutions for persons with disabilities to strengthen Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DIDRR).
Our goal is simple yet urgent:
➡️ Prepare persons with disabilities and their families for multiple hazards
➡️ Reduce the impact of disasters on their mental health and overall well-being
➡️ Build safer, more inclusive environments where no one is left behind

This journey of inclusion and preparedness has been made possible by the unwavering support of the . Their consistent funding, belief, and partnership have empowered us to reach communities that are often overlooked and to ensure that disaster preparedness is accessible to all.

On this International Day for Persons with Disabilities, we reaffirm our commitment to building a resilient, inclusive community
