By aiming to balance greenhouse gas emissions with absorption through local initiatives, these panchayats become grassroots leaders in climate action. They help reduce dependency on fossil fuels by adopting renewable energy, improving waste management, conserving water, and promoting sustainable agriculture. They empower local communities to take ownership of climate solutions, fostering resilience, self-reliance, and economic opportunities. Their success can serve as a model for scaling up climate action across rural India, aligning with national and global sustainability targets.

At Center for Environment and Energy Development (CEED), we believe that empowering women through green livelihoods is the core to a sustainable future. Today, our team conducted an orientation program in Gagaha block of Gorakhpur, engaging 3 Block Mission Managers (BMMs) and 18 Surya Sakhis under the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM) initiative along with Prerna OJAS.

During the session, plans were chalked out to open 2 solar shops at the block level — taking a step further in enabling clean energy access and entrepreneurship at the grassroots to empower the sakhis. We also introduced the participants to the Mukhyamantri Yuwa Udyami Vikaas Abhiyaan of MSME scheme, encouraging women to take advantage of government support to scale their solar enterprises.

With a vision to support 57,000+ Surya Sakhis across Uttar Pradesh, CEED is proud to be part of this transformative journey of training, empowerment, and solar livelihoods.
