Forests are far more than landscapes, they are living production systems and regenerative economic spaces shaping rural prosperity and ecological resilience.
On this International Day of Forests, we are reminded that forests sustain nearly 80% of terrestrial biodiversity, absorb 30% of global carbon emissions, and support over a billion livelihoods worldwide.
In India, forests are deeply intertwined with the lives of nearly 300 million people, especially rural and tribal communities. Beyond ecology, they are engines of local economies, with non-timber forest produce (NTFP) alone contributing up to ₹2 lakh crore annually.
Yet, these ecosystems are under growing threat. Nearly 86 million hectares of India’s forests are at risk, and with just 28 trees per person, the need for collective action has never been more urgent.
From our field experience, real transformation begins when communities move from subsistence to stewardship, seeing forests as systems of livelihoods, dignity, and resilience.
Let us grow with forests; strengthening livelihoods, restoring ecosystems, and securing our future. Every tree matters. Every forest sustains life!
