Kerala Flood Ressponse
The state of Kerala, India witnessed one of the worst floods in the living memory, displacing over 1.2 million people who took shelter in approximately 2,000 camps established by the government. Over 20,000 people had to be evacuated. Finally the rainfalls topped on 20 August and the water started receding but leaving behind a trail of destruction. A real assessment is still not possible, but it is expected that more than 50,000 houses have either been damaged or washed away. 39 bridges and over 80,000 kms of roads have been damaged. There is extensive damage to other infrastructures and livelihood avenues. It will now take years and plenty of resources to rebuild Kerala. HAI started responding to the disaster from the early days, in collaboration with its local partner Cosmic Community Centre, by providing critical support of food and non-food items to the displaced and marooned families. HAI is currently organising medical camps to prevent outbreak of epidemics. However, we quickly need to move to the recovery phase by cleaning up homes and surroundings of the displaced people to facilitate their early return. HAI also wants to fast track restoration of livelihood activities to restore normalcy and self-sufficient. HAI is optimistic of getting support from the Indian community at large and the corporate sector to upscale its response.
