The Trained Nurses’ Association of India believes that:
Good health is a fundamental right to every person and that it is the responsibility of the health profession, including Nursing to provide the kind of health care which will give each individual in society every opportunity to achieve optimum health. As a professional person each nurse ethically and morally responsible for giving the required care. Each nurse is a member of the society and is entitled to the same individual rights, privileges and the goals of physical, mental, economic and social development as are available to other members of the society. FUNCTIONS
• To enunciate standards of nursing education and implement these through appropriate channels.
• To establish standards and qualifications for nursing practice.
• To enunciate standards of Nursing Service and implement these through appropriate channels.
• To establish a code of ethical conduct for practitioners.
• To stimulate and promote research designed to enhance the knowledge for evidence-based nursing practice.
• To promote legislation and to speak for Nurses in regard to legislative action.
• To promote and protect the economic welfare of nurses
• To provide professional counseling and placement service for nurses.
• To provide for the continuing professional development of practitioners
• To represent Nurses and serve as their spoke person with allied national and international organizations, government and other bodies and the public.
• To serve as the official representative of the Nurses of India as a member of the International Council of Nurses.
• To promote the general health and welfare of the public through the Association programmes, relationships and activities e.g. Disaster Management.

• The first conference of the Trained Nurses Association is held at Banaras. (1910)
• Health visitors’ League established under the jurisdiction of the TNAI. (1922)
• Midwives and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives Association established.(1925)
• Instrumental in establishing State Nurses Midwifes Registration Council(1926).
• Students Nurses’ Association (SNA) established (1929). Celebrates silver jubilee in 1954, Golden Jubilee in 1979, Diamond Jubilee in 1989 and Platinum Jubilee in 2004.
• TNAI Adopts the Nurses’ Charter.(1937)
• TNAI is instrumental in establishing Indian Nursing Council. (1947)
• First TNAI State Branch established in Delhi.(1949)
• Foundation stone doe TNAI Headquarters in Green Park, New Delhi, laid by the Vice-President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan.(1960)
• TNAI Headquarters building inaugurated by Smt. Indira Gandhi; Former President TNAI, Ms. Edith Paul was awarded ‘Padmashree” by the President of India.(1961)
• TNAI Becomes a member of the Commonwealth Nurses’ Federation (CNF).(1974)
• TNAI organises International Women’s Conference at Delhi in colleboration with Mc Masters University, Canada.(2000)
• Instrumental in the institution of National award for Nurses in December 11, 1972 to three Nurses by Mr. Giri, hon’ble President of India. The Florence Nightingale National Nurses’ Award restarted in May 2007 after the gap of 21 year by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, hon’ble President of India
• TNAI established naming the lane (infront of the TNAI Headquarters) as a Florence Nightingale Lane in 2007.
• TNAI celebrated its centenary in 2008
• Nursing Journal of India Celebrate its Centenary in 2010
• Postal department (Govt. of India) released the stamp of TNAI in 2011.
• TNAI’s Central Institute of Nursing & research and Elderly Care Home was inaugurated by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Former President of India in 2012.
