Room to Read India Room to Read India was established in 2003.Working on Foundational Literacy and Gender Education

Room to Read was founded on the belief that “World Change Starts with Educated Children.® We envision a world in which all children can pursue quality education that enables them to reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world. Room to Read India is a part of a global network that includes program operations in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, So

uth Africa, Zambia and Tanzania. Since our inception in 2003, we have touched the lives of millions of young children across nine states: Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Maharashtra. To ensure our programs have the greatest reach and impact, we build strong partnerships with local governments, communities, and non-governmental organizations. Targeting children in the age group 6-18 years, in both rural and urban settings, our partners help us implement our work and contribute to our success. Room to Read’s literacy initiatives are designed to address a range of educational needs for turning children into independent learners with a promising future. Our Girls’ Education program (GEP) seeks to ensure that girls complete secondary school and have the skills to negotiate key life decisions.

World Environment Day | Nurturing Young Climate Leaders

On World Environment Day, we celebrate the power of adolescents to create a more sustainable and equitable future. Through Room to Read’s Climate Change Leadership Program (CCLP), adolescent girls are not only learning about climate change but also becoming informed advocates and changemakers in their homes, schools and communities.

An extension of Room to Read’s life skills curriculum, the program helps girls in Grades 6–8 build a deeper understanding of climate change, climate justice, and the ways environmental challenges disproportionately affect women and girls. It combines climate education with critical life skills such as decision-making, leadership, communication and problem-solving. This gives adolescents the confidence and tools to drive local climate action.

Girls like Anushka and Aarushi are translating learning into leadership. Aarushi put her learning into practice by planting five trees and encouraging her family to adopt more environmentally responsible habits at home. Anushka has become a climate advocate within her own household, sharing information about climate change and inspiring conversations on sustainable living.

"After learning that climate change is caused by human activities, I started explaining these things to my family and encouraging changes at home," says Anushka.

A book. A voice. A room full of curious minds.

Watch Amita read ‘Betiyaan Bhi Chaahein Aazaadi’ by Pratham Books and witness the magic as children light up, exploring what freedom truly means to them.

The title won the Teacher-Librarian's Choice award at the Room to Read Children's Literature Awards in 2025 for being popular in library and classroom spaces in India!

Reading isn't just about words on a page. It's about the world those words open up.

Foundational literacy is not just an educational goal; it is the foundation of an equitable society.

Room to Read India set up a stall showcasing the outcomes of our Literacy Program in Pune District on the 200th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and the inauguration of the first CBSE affiliated Zilla Parishad School: Jyoti-Savitri Zilla Parishad School in Khanwadi, Pune.

At the stall, we showcased the impact of our Literacy Program across Pune District, from building foundational reading skills and strengthening school libraries to creating joyful, inclusive learning environments for children. At its core, this work is made possible by a deep, sustained partnership with the government education system.

We were honored to welcome Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister Smt. Sunetra Pawar; Hon'ble MP Smt. Supriya Sule, alongside State ministers; Shri Gajanan Patil IAS, CEO, Zilla Parishad; Shri Veerdhaval Jagdale, President, Zilla Parishad and senior officials, all of whom visited the stall and engaged with our library model.

Smt. Sule engaged with the team on program design and discussed scaling the model to new geographies and shared written feedback following her visit, “The efforts of the program to develop the habit of reading among children are truly commendable. I am truly grateful to the organization for this effort.”

Moments like these solidify our belief that transforming public education at scale requires government ownership, community trust and models that work in practice. When these elements are aligned, foundational learning moves from policy to classroom and from intent to outcome.

Today, on Global Day of Parents, we celebrate the most robust support system in a child's life: their parents.

At Room to Read, we know that empowering a child begins at home. Under the Literacy Program, we work hand-in-hand with parents and caregivers to build the supportive home environments children need to thrive.

Under Room to Read’s Gender Equality Portfolio, we take a comprehensive approach to empowering girls by prioritizing parental support. Our Social Mobilizers conduct workshops with parents to highlight the critical role parents and caregivers play in their daughters’ education. These sessions address common challenges and underscore the importance of parental involvement.

Through our programs, parents gain self-confidence and receive training in career planning, financial management, child marriage prevention, and vocational training. These skills equip them to foster a supportive home environment for their children.

Equipping Parents is empowering children!

Sessions two through four of our consultation workshop on materials creation featured important conversations on inclusive, human-centered education, helping us rethinking not just what is taught, but how, for whom and with whose input.

The experts included Stuti Gaur - Academic Coordinator, Inclusive Ed, Education Dept, Govt. of Delhi; Sonali Khan - Managing Director, Sesame Workshop India; Dr. Deepali Taneja - Associate Professor, OP Jindal University; Dr. Nitya Sarkar - Lead- Curriculum Development and Training, Jai Vakeel Foundation; Aarti Johar - Lead – Projects, Operations & Social Media, Orkids Foundation; Merry Baruah - Founder, Director Action for Autism, National Centre for Autism India; and Aditi Sowmyanarayan - writer and blogger and her mother Shwetha Srivathsan - an educator.

Collectively, presenters discussed implementation gaps, particularly in teacher training and preparedness, practices in the classroom, and identification of CwSN in formal spaces. The importance of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) was emphasized, along with the benefits of technology and a focus on accessible visual design, sensory-sensitive layouts for books and other reading materials, and the possibilities of inclusive storytelling.

Inclusive education benefits everyone but demands long-term, system-wide effort: from curriculum design and teacher training to policy and learning materials.

Room to Read India is committed to turning collaboration into collective action, together with educators, policymakers, and communities.

Our consultation workshop on May 22, 2026, featured discussions around creating reading materials for children with special needs, with a focus on neurodivergent children and children with intellectual disabilities. Experts collectively underscored that inclusive education in India is a legal right backed by robust policy frameworks, yet a stark implementation gap persists.

The opening session on ‘Policy, Systems and Inclusion’ featured Prof. Vinay Kumar Singh - Head-Department Education of Groups with Special Needs, NCERT, Dr. Aloka Guha - Dis(Ability) Consultant; Sonali Saini - Founder, Sol's ARC; Dr. Ravi Prakash Singh - Officer In-Charge & Asst. Professor, NIEPID and Shrivika Dhawan - Regional Chief of Staff, Asia Pacific, Dalberg Advisors. Collectively, they examined the legal and policy landscape supporting inclusive education in India, including the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, the National Education Policy 2020, the National Curriculum Frameworks, and the Samagra Shiksha scheme.

The session gave us an overview of how laws, policies and schemes form a comprehensive framework, where disability rights are fundamental to true inclusion.

Today, Room to Read India took a step toward answering what it takes to build learning environments where every child truly belongs and is celebrated.

Together we explored what inclusive pedagogy looks like in practice, how learning materials can reflect the diverse identities, languages and lived experiences of children across India, and what it truly means for a child to see themselves in the stories they read. When a child feels seen, they are more likely to stay, to learn, and to thrive.

Poornima Garg, Country Director, Room to Read India, set the tone for the conversation with a statement: inclusive education is not about access alone, it is about dignity. She challenged the room to stop fitting children into systems and start building systems around children.

In the coming days we will be sharing the insights from speakers and learnings and key takeaways from the workshop.

The road to truly inclusive learning is long, but today we emerged with a renewed sense of purpose and a collective commitment to doing this work with care, courage and community.

As our speaker lineup continues to grow, we’re thrilled to welcome more inspiring voices to this important conversation, each bringing unique perspectives to deepen our understanding of children with diverse learning needs. Because when it comes to inclusion, every perspective matters and every child must be seen!

Theme: Beyond the Visible: Designing for Minds That Learn Differently

Together, we will explore how reading and literature can be reimagined to truly include children with neurodiversities and learning disabilities and how we can expand access for those who learn differently.

Stay tuned as we introduce our speakers and continue this journey toward more inclusive, dignified learning for all.
