World Animal Protection India

World Animal Protection India Together, we’re changing the way the world works to end animal cruelty and suffering. Forever..... Our values and behaviours underpin everything we do.

We have moved the world to protect animals for more than 50 years. Formerly known as WSPA – the World Society for the Protection of Animals; World Animal Protection as known from June 2014 onwards remains determined & committed to protecting animals. Our vision is a world where animals live free from suffering - together we can move the world for animals. Through campaigning, we move the world to

protect animals on a huge scale. Our goal is to -

• Ensure farmed animals live good lives by transforming the global food system.
• Stop wild animals being cruelly exploited as commodities or entertainers by changing the systems that allow it to happen. Together we act urgently to change mindsets, and behaviours and reverse the exploitation of wild and farmed animals by ensuring –

- Millions more people take action, get inspired, contribute and lead their own change of welfare and protection of animals which fuels their abuse.

- More people and partners are aware, sensitised and contribute towards our vision to see this world cruelty-free where animals live free without suffering. At World Animal Protection, we work hard every day to protect animals and we couldn't do it without you and your colleagues, family and friends. We are committed to continually improving the well-being of all animals around the world bringing an end to their suffering.

Tiny wings. A second chance.

This White-breasted Waterhen chick was rescued in Shimuliapara, North 24 Parganas, and is currently under care before being safely released back into the wild.

Many wild birds fall victim to habitat disturbance, illegal capture, and unsafe human interference. Every rescue is a reminder that wildlife belongs in nature—not in cages, markets, or homes.

Protecting wildlife starts with awareness, compassion, and action.

This baby Asian Palm Civet should have been in the wild — not in human hands.

Every year, countless wild animals are trapped, traded, and displaced from their natural habitats due to the illegal wildlife trade. Many never make it back home.

This civet was rescued in North 24 Parganas, Habra, and is now under care before being safely released. But not every animal gets a second chance.

Wildlife belongs in the wild.
Say NO to the illegal wildlife trade.

International Tuna Day, observed every year on May 2, highlights the urgent need to conserve tuna populations and promote sustainable fishing practices.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2016 and first observed in 2017, the day draws attention to the growing decline in global tuna stocks and the need for stronger international cooperation.

Tuna and tuna-like species contribute significantly to the global economy, representing 20% of the value of all marine captured fisheries and over 8% of globally traded seafood—worth more than $42 billion annually.

But behind this industry lies a growing crisis. Overfishing remains the biggest threat to tuna populations, with species like the Atlantic Bluefin experiencing severe declines, some by more than 96%. Tuna fishing also raises serious animal welfare concerns, as hook-caught tunas suffer major injuries, while bycatch from fishing operations continues to harm dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life.

As apex predators, tuna are essential to maintaining the balance of ocean ecosystems and healthy marine food webs. Protecting them means protecting the health of our oceans.

Consumers can support sustainable fishing by choosing products with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) blue fish tick label on canned tuna.

The 2025 theme, “Our Ocean, Our Tuna, Our Future,” reminds us that safeguarding tuna populations is a shared global responsibility.

World Animal Protection is alarmed at the incident of the elephant killing a man and all associated incidents of people being injured by captive elephants in different festivals in Kerala. Elephants are wild animals and should not be used in festivals to cater to human interests. The elephant is India’s National Heritage Animal and should be revered in the wild where they belong. Elephant belong in the wild. Wildlife belongs in the wild.

Leopards are essential to the health of natural ecosystems. As apex predators, they help maintain balance within the food chain by regulating prey populations, which in turn supports vegetation and overall biodiversity. Despite their adaptability, increasing habitat loss, fragmentation, and human-wildlife conflict continue to threaten their survival. Safeguarding leopards means protecting the ecosystems they sustain — ensuring stability not just for wildlife, but for the environment as a whole.

Despite their reputation in popular culture, hyenas are remarkable animals known for their strong social structures and problem-solving abilities. They play a key role in ecosystems by helping recycle nutrients through scavenging.

This International Hyena Day, raising awareness about their ecological importance can help shift perceptions and encourage greater protection for wildlife.

Tapirs have walked the Earth for millions of years, yet today, they need us more than ever.

On World Tapir Day, meet the tapir, often called a “living fossil”, and more closely related to rhinos and horses than pigs.

With their unique prehensile snout, they feed on leaves, fruits, and aquatic plants, playing a vital role as the “gardeners of the forest” by dispersing seeds and helping ecosystems regenerate.
They are excellent swimmers, mostly active at night, and found across Central & South America and Southeast Asia. Baby tapirs are born with striped coats for camouflage, which fade as they grow.
But all four species, Baird’s, Lowland, Mountain, and Malayan, are under threat due to habitat loss, hunting, and illegal wildlife trade. Tapirs are even being detected in trafficking networks in India.

Protecting tapirs means protecting forests, water systems, and biodiversity.
