Shanti Sahyog - a Gandhian NGO

Shanti Sahyog - a Gandhian NGO Shanti Sahyog is a Gandhian NGO serving the underprivileged in 17 urban slums of Delhi (Kalkaji/Govindpuri area) with a focus on women and children.

Greatly inspired by the Gandhian adage, “An ounce of practice is better than a ton of theory”, Shanti Sahyog was registered in New Delhi on 30th September 1992 as an All-India Gandhian NGO. It is dedicated to serve the underprivileged - especially women and children - to empower them through education, health care and vocational training leading to economic independence. Shanti Sahyog also works t

o propagate and promote nonviolence as a means of conflict resolution. In 2004, the Community Service wing of Shanti Sahyog was started with the adoption of Sudhar Camp, a slum in Kalkaji, New Delhi. Today we are working in the 17 slums in South Delhi beside Sudhar Camp.: The families living in these slums are struggling to live their lives just above the poverty line. Few of the children are enrolled in formal education at the local Government school, with drop-out rates being very high. Young boys are given a preference over daughters to have an education as the girls accompany their mothers and start working for a few rupees a month as child labour. Shanti Sahyog aims to work with the residents of the above slums to help them strive towards a better quality of life. The aim is to tackle problems at a grass roots level and find sustainable solutions. Shanti Sahyog is currently running the following projects for the underprivileged: Quality education for urban slum children, Play/Pre School to keep the children off the streets before they start regular school, Adult Education, Non-Formal/Remedial Education, Health Centre, Free Eye/Medical/Mammography Camps, Charitable Dental Centre, Gender Resource Centre, Computer Training, Basic & Advanced Cutting & Tailoring Course, Beauty Culture Training Program, Legal Aid/Counseling and 4 Night Shelters.
