Granny was loving and always so happy, wagging her tail when she saw us, gave us her absolute all. Many of us share an intense love and bond with Granny. For us, granny was not “just a dog” , but rather a beloved member of our furrytails family, bringing companionship, fun, and joy to our lives. As she aged, she experienced an increasing number of major life changes, including the loss of beloved friends, family members. For many of us and her family, granny was probably our salient companion, and taking care of her provided us all with a sense of purpose and self-worth.
But no one ever tells you that when a dog is dying, it feels like a human is dying.
The reason it feels like a human died is because, in so many ways, dogs are like us. They spend much of their life caring for us, and letting us care for them. Their life arc is our life arc, from streets to shelter, from hardship to bliss. I don’t know how to say goodbye. But in this moment, there is only one thing I actually wanted to say to Granny, our jet black dog: Thank you.
While this pain may go away, your happy memories of will always remain. May you depart this earth in peace and your soul descends back home to heaven.
