The Revolutionists, Debating Society of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College started out as an idea in August 2012 by a group of 13 students and became an official society of the college in September 2012, under the leadership of founder president Sankalp Mathur. The society draws its name from the legendary revolutionary Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. Invoking his virtuous resolve to question and change th
e status quo, the society was founded with the unassuming aim to provide a deliberative platform and environment for the students of SBSC to debate on contemporary issues, share knowledge and recognise difference of opinion as a worthy object of celebration in its own right. Since then we have had Dhanajit Ray, Utsav Batra as presidents under whose guidance society progressed tremendously. Two standout mentors of the society have been Yash Narain – a very well-known debater in the Delhi parliamentary debate circuit. Diksha Verma and Nitya Agarwal deserve a special mention for not only contributing in as mentors but also for being instrumental in keeping the society together as one family. This year under the leadership of President Rishabh Chopra and vice president Soumya Verma society has focused all endeavours in order to establish the society in the Delhi parliamentary debate circuit. Since last year we have been actively participating in reputed parliamentary debate tournaments such as People’s speak (Sri Venkateshwara college), Frank Thakur Das debate (Kirori Mal college), Professor Ghanshyam Singh memorial debate (NLU-Delhi), Polemic (Ramjas), Premchand parliamentary debate (Hindu) among others. We have won debates against teams from Ramjas, Venkateshwar, Motilal Nehru and Lady Shriram college among many others and our debate teams are becoming a force to reckon with. Our Adjudicators have come on adjudicator panels in various tournaments. The Society also organises interactive sessions by prominent people from the debating circuit that help guide our members and provide them with insights on different debating and quizzing skills and techniques. Last year one of the most prominent session was taken by none other than “Siddharth Thyagrajan”, the founder of the debating society of Ramjas college. He is one of the best parliamentary debaters in India who has represented India in national and international debating events such as Oxford. The society wishes to become one of the established societies in Delhi Debating circuit in the upcoming years and is working to achieve the same.
