Depleted groundwater. Changing precipitation patterns. Uncertainty in agriculture. Communities on the edge.💧

When Water For People India Trust first began its partnership with 3M India in Jan 2024, these were the ground realities facing communities in Shirur, Pune District, Maharashtra. But there were no ready-made solutions.

Together with 3M India and the local communities, we co-created solutions using integrated interventions that combine technical knowledge, sustainable agricultural practices and community participation, equipping community members with tools to build their resilience.

The result?

✅About 190.82 million litres of water conserved across 1,121 hectares, eliminating the need for 38,000 water tankers.
✅Over 1,000 farmers have embraced climate-resilient practices
✅while more than 15,000 community members are actively contributing to water conservation efforts.

“Because of the water conservation efforts, our groundwater levels have increased. Prior to this, we didn't have even 2 to 3 feet of water, but now our wells can hold upto 3 to 4 feet,” says Sudam Dnyanoba Thite, farmer, Thitemala village.

Lasting water security begins with community ownership.

As part of the 1st–5th June World Environment Day celebrations, a field visit covered 10 Gram Panchayats under Rampur Development Block. It brought together PRI members, Panchayat officials, the District SBM team, and Water For People India Trust for a ground-level assessment of sanitation infrastructure.
The visit focused on inspecting SBM assets, identifying operational gaps, and finding practical, community-driven solutions to improve maintenance and long-term functionality. Meaningful dialogues with Panchayat representatives reinforced the necessity of local ownership in sustaining clean infrastructure.
Every conversation at the grassroots level brings us one step closer to a cleaner, healthier future.

India achieved open defecation-free status through a remarkable coalition among the government, civic bodies, and the public. This infrastructure feat deserves all kudos. Yet only a small fraction of adolescent women in India exclusively use hygienic methods during menstruation, and progress on menstrual hygiene management (MHM) continues to lag far behind. Banasree Das talks about the need to build not only infrastructure, but also, education, destigmatisation, and inclusion to achieve full period equity.

We talked to young men about periods.
Their responses show exactly why discussions around menstruation and menstrual hygiene must include boys and men as active participants. When men understand and take ownership of the issue, women get better access to period care.
