Be it through a mere poem, or an article, YOU can help thousands of people realize the severe austerity faced by the elders of our country. Social Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Economic Abuse... it is time we wipe aside these problems, and replace them with joy, and happiness. The elders of our country raised us, and made this country what it is now. It is time we give back, and let them know that we have not forgotten them.

HelpAge India launched its report, 'Climate Resilient Ageing: Ensuring Care, Dignity & Agency', in Kerala at the Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The event, led by Mr. Biju Mathew, State Head – Kerala, brought together voices from government bodies, disaster management authorities and senior citizens’ organisations to discuss the growing intersection of ageing and climate change.

Shri. K.N.K. Nambudiri, Member, Kerala State Vayojana Commission, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The panel discussion featured Smt. Anagha E, State Consultant, Kerala State Disaster Management Authority - KSDMA; Shri. Haneefa Rawuther, Member, Kerala State Vayojana Council; Shri. P. Chandrasenan, President, Senior Citizens Service Council; and Shri. Augustine, President, Kerala Punajani Vayojana Samithi, Kollam.

The deliberations highlighted the need to strengthen support systems for older persons, ensure their voices are reflected in climate action and disaster preparedness, and recognise them as active contributors to building resilient communities.

The discussions concluded with a shared understanding that climate resilience must be inclusive of all ages, with older persons at the centre of planning, preparedness and community-led solutions.

On the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026, HelpAge India organised a state-level event in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, bringing together policymakers, government representatives, media and civil society to discuss the growing intersection of ageing and climate change.

The event also marked the launch of HelpAge India's national research report, Climate Resilient Ageing: Ensuring Care, Dignity and Agency, which examines how climate-related challenges are affecting older persons across rural India and identifies pathways to strengthen resilience.

We were honoured to have Dr. K. Subramaniam, Member, Rajya NITI Aayog, Chhattisgarh, as the Chief Guest, along with Dr. Smriti Dewangan, Deputy Director, Health Department, Chhattisgarh, and Mrs. Seema Bhaskar, ACP, Raipur, as Special Guests.

The discussion highlighted the urgent need for climate-resilient systems that safeguard the health, livelihoods, care and wellbeing of older persons, particularly those facing multiple vulnerabilities.

Mr. Subhankar Biswas, State Head – Chhattisgarh, HelpAge India, welcomed the gathering and reiterated the importance of ensuring that older persons are recognised not only as a vulnerable group, but also as active contributors to building resilient communities.

The event reinforced a common message: climate adaptation efforts must place older persons at the centre of planning, preparedness and response to ensure care, dignity and agency for all.

How are climate-related challenges impacting the lives of rural older persons?

HelpAge India's national research report, Climate Resilient Ageing – Ensuring Care, Dignity & Agency, draws on the experiences of 2,224 older persons across 20 districts in 10 states to better understand what shapes climate vulnerability in later life.

The findings reveal that climate vulnerability among older persons is shaped not by age alone, but by a range of interconnected factors, including health and mobility limitations, economic circumstances, living arrangements and geographic location.

At a time when India is navigating both climate change and population ageing, the report offers important insights into the realities facing rural older persons and the support they need to build resilience.

Older persons are already navigating climate-related challenges. The question is not only how we protect them, but how we strengthen the support systems they rely on, recognise their capacities and ensure they have a voice in shaping solutions.

Marking 'World Elder Abuse Awareness Day', HelpAge India launched its national research report, 'Climate Resilient Ageing – Ensuring Care, Dignity & Agency', through a series of events across the country.

In New Delhi, the launch brought together policymakers, researchers, practitioners, community representatives and students for a rich exchange of perspectives on climate-resilient ageing.

We were honoured to be joined by Mr. Amarjeet Sinha, Former Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India and Member, HelpAge India Governing Body, who delivered the keynote address. We were also delighted to welcome Ms. Sharmila Tagore, Padma Bhushan awardee and Honorary Brand Ambassador, HelpAge India, who delivered an evocative address. The event also featured special addresses by Mr. Kiran Karnik, Chairperson, HelpAge India, and Ms. Rumjhum Chatterjee, Vice Chairperson, HelpAge India.

Presenting the report's key findings, Ms. Anupama Datta, Head – Policy Research & Advocacy, HelpAge India, highlighted how floods, droughts, heatwaves and other extreme weather events are affecting older lives and livelihoods, and the importance of ensuring care, dignity and agency as communities build resilience.

At the heart of the event was a conversation with elder leaders Mrs. Kalpana Samanta (West Bengal), Mr. Sitaram Mandal (Bihar) and Mrs. Sarju Bai (Madhya Pradesh), moderated by Mr. Girish C Mishra, Mission Head – Livelihoods & Resilience, HelpAge India. Through stories of resilience, leadership and community action, they brought the report's findings to life.

The discussion concluded with a vibrant audience interaction, including thoughtful questions from young students that added an important intergenerational perspective to the conversation.

As the event concluded, one message stood out clearly: resilience is strongest when it is built with older persons, not simply for them. Their knowledge, experience and leadership are not just part of the conversation but are essential to the solutions.

'View Ageing not as a decline, but as a growth’ – that was the thought behind the jointly organised roundtable discussion today on ‘Seniors as Tutors: A Model for Productive Ageing & Intergenerational Impact’ by HelpAge India & Inspiring Seniors Foundation.

The discussion highlighted the need for a broader shift in how we view ageing. Too often, ageing is seen through the lens of dependency and decline. Yet older persons bring decades of experience, knowledge and perspective that can enrich families, communities and future generations.

It focused on how older persons can contribute as tutors and mentors, sharing their knowledge, expertise, lived experiences and life lessons while helping in developing key skills & learning amongst the younger generations, especially those children & youth who are disadvantaged.

Participants also explored how such intergenerational initiatives can promote active and productive ageing, strengthen social connections, and create positive outcomes for both seniors and the youth.

The roundtable brought together stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, education, healthcare and the development sector, to discuss pathways for strengthening and scaling such models across communities and institutions.

Led by Mr. Rohit Prasad, CEO, and Ms. Anupama Datta, Head – Policy, Research & Advocacy, HelpAge India, and Ms. Malti Jaswal, Founder, Inspiring Seniors Foundation, eminent experts shared their views such as - Dr. Nachiket Mor, Visiting Scientist, BALM - Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health, Mr. Philip O’Keefe, Senior Social Protection Specialist, The World Bank Group, Mr. Amit Yadav, Former Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, and Mr. Ram Singh, Joint Director, Department of Education, Government of India.

Platforms such as these help challenge age-limiting perceptions and encourage a more positive vision of ageing; one that focuses on purpose, participation and contribution. By creating opportunities for older persons to remain engaged and share their strengths, we can move closer to a society that not only adds years to life, but life to years and turns age into an 'AdvantAge'.
