elderly in our country. Through our 'Student Action for Value Education' advocacy, we aim to inculcate children with morally correct values and ideals. To whomever reading this, helpage urges YOU to help spread our message to however many people you can. Be it through a mere poem, or an article, YOU can help thousands of people realize the severe austerity faced by the elders of our country. Social Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Economic Abuse... it is time we wipe aside these problems, and replace them with joy, and happiness. The elders of our country raised us, and made this country what it is now. It is time we give back, and let them know that we have not forgotten them.

This Independence Day, we revisit this beautiful and heartwarming moment between young Stanzin, the caregiver at our Senior Care Home in and 76 year old Tsering Mutup, a resident of the home. They even exchanged their hats for this.😊

Mutup was living a life of hardship and destitution, with no one by his side, before he found a home at the HelpAge supported Leh Home. Today, it has given him something invaluable - a sense of family, care and belonging.

This moment with Stanzin, is just one of many moments that capture the spirit of life at the home, filled with affection, laughter, playfulness and the freedom to simply be oneself. Above all, it reflects the warmth of knowing that you are cared for, are no longer alone and that you belong. Moments like these truly warm the heart.

Our elders are our foundation, our legacy, whom we must protect, care for and ensure live with dignity.

They nurtured families & held them together, strengthened communities, built homes & institutions, passed on traditions and values, that continue to guide & strengthen us and future generations.

We recognize & celebrate our elders who are , whose values, sacrifices, wisdom and lived experiences, have helped shape the India we know today.

In a landmark step towards strengthening palliative care in the remote and high-altitude region of Ladakh, Sonam Nurboo Memorial Hospital (SNM) Leh in collaboration with HelpAge India and with support from Cipla Foundation, has launched an initiative to strengthen palliative care services at SNM Hospital Leh, bringing compassionate, patient-centred care closer to individuals living with serious and life-limiting illnesses and their families.

In a region where geography can make access to specialised healthcare particularly challenging, the need for palliative care is significant. Leh District has an estimated 750-1000 individuals at any point requiring care, many suffering from chronic heart, respiratory, liver or renal failure, COPD, stroke, cancer and severe age-related frailty.

Until recently, there was no structured palliative care system in Leh. Responding to these gaps, SNM Hospital initiated a small palliative ward and a day-care centre.

The strengthened Palliative Care Centre at SNM Hospital will provide care on both an OPD and IPD basis, with home-based care planned as a subsequent phase. The initiative will also focus on pain and symptom management, holistic support for patients and caregivers, and training and mentorship for healthcare providers.

The initiative was formally inaugurated by Dr. Laltinkhuma Franklin, IAS, Health and Medical Education, Union Territory of Ladakh, in the presence of Mr. ANURAG MISHRA, Head, Cipla Foundation; Dr. Prakash Fernandes, Cipla Foundation; Dr. Tashi Thinlay, Director Health Services, UT Ladakh; Mr. Tushar Anand (IAS), MD, NHM; Dr. Rinchen Chosdol, CMO Leh; Mr. Rohit Prasad, CEO, HelpAge India; Dr. Dr. Ritu Rana, Mission Head – Health, HelpAge India; and Dr Rajesh Kumar, State Head (H.P. & Ladakh), HelpAge India.

Through this partnership, we collectively aim to establish a comprehensive, institutional, community-linked palliative care system that integrates medical, psychosocial and spiritual support.

HelpAge India was honoured to be a part of the state-level consultation workshop on ‘Creating a Well-Functioning Care Economy for Senior Citizens’, organised by the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Chhattisgarh, in Raipur.

The consultation brought together policymakers, experts, stakeholders and development partners to deliberate on strengthening an inclusive and sustainable care economy for senior citizens.

The workshop was chaired by Smt. Laxmi Rajwade, Hon’ble Minister, with Smt. Shahla Nigar, Principal Secretary, Government of Chhattisgarh, and Shri Ranbir Sharma, Director, Department of Social Welfare, Government of Chhattisgarh, among the dignitaries present.

Representing HelpAge India, Mr. Subhankar Biswas, State Head – Chhattisgarh, highlighted the need for accessible, affordable and quality care that enables older persons to live with dignity, independence and respect. He also emphasised that investing in healthcare, trained caregivers, community support and social protection can improve the lives of older persons while creating livelihoods, strengthening families and contributing to a more inclusive society where ageing is valued.

Mobility is more than movement - it is independence, confidence and the freedom to continue living life with dignity.

In Leh, HelpAge India, through the collective efforts of our Mobile Healthcare Unit, Elder Help Desk, Helpline and Senior Care Home teams, organised an Assistive Devices Distribution Camp to aid older persons with the support they need for everyday life.

We were honoured by the presence of Shri Konchok Sherap, Chief Planning Officer, Leh, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Seniors received assistive devices, including wheelchairs, walkers, walking sticks, knee caps, auxiliary crutches, lumbar belts and heating pads.

Because growing older should never mean giving up on the ability to live and active and fulfilling lives. 💛

We are delighted to share that HelpAge India has launched a new Mobile Healthcare Unit (MHU) in partnership with ExxonMobil in Gundlupete, Karnataka. The MHU will bring essential primary healthcare services to the doorstep of disadvantaged older persons and their communities, helping improve access to timely and quality care.

Each MHU is staffed by a doctor, pharmacist and social worker, providing primary healthcare, medicines, health education and referrals, while also raising awareness on preventive healthcare among older persons and their families.

The inaugural programme was graced by Mr. H.M. Ganesh Prasad, MLA, Gundlupete; Mr. Prashant Deshpande, CRO, ExxonMobil; Ms. Salonika Misra, Upstream Economics Analyst, ExxonMobil; Dr. Aleem Pasha, Taluk Health Officer; Gram Panchayat and Health Department officials, community leaders, ASHA workers, Mr. M. Prakashan, State Head – Karnataka, HelpAge India, and other HelpAge team members.

The event also included a health camp and the distribution of assistive devices to older beneficiaries, reaffirming our shared commitment to healthy and dignified ageing.
