Some stories ask for a room, not a screen.

With Pulp Society, we hosted Do Kahaaniyan, a screening of Moshari and Barber of the Gods that felt less like an event and more like a shared moment. Watching these films in a room full of people made the silences heavier and the questions linger longer.

The post-screening conversation with the filmmakers reminded us why community screenings matter, not just to watch films, but to sit with them, talk about them, and carry them forward.

Two films. Two moods. One evening of unsettling cinema.

In collaboration with Pulp Society, Genre.X presented Do Kahaaniyan, a double screening of Moshari and Barber of the Gods. While vastly different in form and setting, both films explore fear, faith, and fragility in ways that stay with you long after the screen fades to black.

Moshari traps you in silence and decay, where horror feels personal and unavoidable. Barber of the Gods leans into myth and morality, using folklore to examine power, belief, and quiet violence. Together, they formed a conversation rather than a contrast.

The night concluded with a post-screening discussion with the filmmakers, opening up their creative processes and inviting the audience to engage beyond passive viewing, because the best stories don’t end with the credits.

Cinema, as always, did the talking.

In an unnamed town in 2000s India, a barber and his son possess a strange gift, they can regrow people’s hair in exchange for years from their lives. In a parallel realm rooted in Hindu cosmology, a divine barber and his curious apprentice tend to the gods themselves.

We're holding the flashlight to an indie cinema night in Delhi, Dec 20th.

Do Kahaniya: A Genre Showcase celebrates indie cinema by spotlighting independent films from emerging artists, offering audiences a window into fresh voices and perspectives in contemporary filmmaking.

In December chapter, we explore two films, Barber of the Gods and Moshari.

Barber of the Gods is a mytho-urban tale that blends mythology with urban life. The film stars the versatile Kumud Mishra and has been featured at the Dharamshala International Film Festival 2025, where it garnered attention for its innovative approach to mythological storytelling. The film is directed by the acclaimed Sushant Nagpal, an award-winning filmmaker who received the prestigious JCS International Emmy Award in 2025.

Moshari is a 2022 Oscar-qualified horror film that masterfully integrates futurism into the horror genre. The film has achieved international recognition, having been featured at the BFI London Film Festival, and showcases how traditional narratives can be transformed into visceral cinematic experiences. It is directed by Nuhash Humayun, a 2022 Sundance Institute Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and an Asian Film Academy alumni.

Together, these films illustrate the power of indie cinema to reinterpret cultural heritage through modern lenses, creating narratives that resonate with audiences.

"Places where the trains don't stop, that's where our business was," Tulsi Ramsay once reflected in an interview, capturing the essence of a production house that thrived beyond Bollywood's glittering mainstream. 🚉🎞️

As Ashim Ahluwalia writes in the foreword to Don't Disturb The Dead: The Story of the Ramsay Brothers, "They were probably the first 'Indie' production company in the country but rarely have been given the credit... The existence of their films was incredibly disruptive, breaking with timeworn perceptions in a hugely conventional market. Their work also offered precious insights into what our society represses or conceals. ⌛

As part of The Great Indian Halloween, we co-curated Ramsay Revival in collaboration with Soho House, Mumbai with our screening partner

🎬The evening commenced with a screening of Ashim Ahluwalia's evocative short film Palace of Horrors, followed by an intimate introduction into the genre of horror and the Ramsay legacy.

🎬The centrepiece of the evening was a screening of Purana Mandir (1984), one of the most iconic entries in the Ramsay filmography, allowing audiences to experience the film's atmospheric terror on the big screen.

🎬The screening was followed by an illuminating conversation featuring Deepak Ramsay and Sandesh Shenoy guided by Anubhuti Banerjee, our moderator for the evening.

Interactive questions, fandom nostalgia, and cultural discussion around cinema, the event was a success.

Special thanks to our co-curators and audience.

Three cities. Three nights.
One extraordinary celebration.

Mumbai's night of revival.
Delhi's community screening.
Goa's drag fire.

The Great Indian Halloween became a space where India's horror traditions met contemporary q***r expression, where cinema history sparked community dialogue, and where Halloween was reimagined through a distinctly Indian lens.

Thank you to everyone who made these nights unforgettable: the storytellers, the queens, the cinema lovers, and every person who showed up to celebrate what it means to reimagine the lost and reclaim the transgressive.

Special thanks to our community partners from all three cities, who made this campaign a success.

Horror in India has never existed in isolation. It weaves through our traditions, mythology, and collective anxieties, operating within different contexts that reflect the subcontinent's plurality.

At Genre X, when we conceptualised The Great Indian Halloween ( ), we envisioned it as an expansive cultural exploration.

From the Ramsay Brothers' pioneering horror films that shaped Bollywood's genre landscape, to Halloween Drag as a celebration and reclamation of what society deems transgressive, we celebrated the multiplicities contained within the concept of Halloween.
