Sustainable Livelihood Programs: aim at improving the quality of life of excluded communities by creating sustainable livelihood options in adherence with the principles of social and ecological inclusion

Key Facts:
a. IGSSS implemented programs in 6 states whereas in 14 states IGSSS supported grass-root NGO partners

b. Through Sustainable Livelihood programs IGSSS reached out to 71,534 families of which 96% belong to SC/ST and OBC families

2. Urban Poverty Reduction Programs: aim at reducing residential, social, occupational vulnerability of the urban poor, with special emphasis on informal sector workers

Key Facts:
a. The direct intervention programs were implemented in Delhi whereas in 12 states IGSSS worked with NGO partners

b. IGSSS reached out to 18,830 families through its Urban Poverty Programmes of which 79% belong to SC/ST and OBC

3. Disaster Risk Reduction Programs: focus on building resilient and empowered communities in most vulnerable regions and providing relief and rehabilitation during natural and human-made disasters

Key Facts:
a. Under DRR, IGSSS directly implemented relief and rehabilitation programs in 5 states and reached out to 23,124 families of which 89% belong to SC/ST and OBC

4. Gender Equity Programs: promote equity in opportunity, access and control between women and men, girls and boys over resources and entitlements

Key Facts:
a. Gender Programs were implemented through NGO partners in two states – Uttar Pradesh and Manipur covering 59 villages

b. These programs reached out to 5,603 SC and ST families

5. Youth Development Programs: build capacities of youth through various engagements helping them become active citizens contributing to the development of society

Key Facts:
a. In five states IGSSS worked with its partners on youth specific programs whereas in Delhi IGSSS implements skill development programs for migrant youth

b. Programs on youth reached out to 5,653 individuals of which 92% belong to SC/ST and OBC

Millet Magic: Women Baking Dreams

In Khedi village, Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, two Self-Help Groups of 23 women are turning locally grown millets into a growing bakery enterprise under the HDFC BANK Parivartan–IGSSS Focused Development Programme.

From millet biscuits to dalia and multigrain atta, the women are creating nutritious, preservative-free products while building a sustainable income source. Led by Antimbala Patel, the enterprise has helped women move beyond daily-wage work towards more stable, collective livelihoods.

As revenues grow, the group is gradually building the financial base to expand production. What began as a small village bakery is becoming more than a source of income—it is a story of women’s entrepreneurship, local value addition, and dignity through livelihoods.

From millet fields to market shelves, these women are baking a more resilient future—one nutritious packet at a time.

A Toilet That Brought Back Peace of Mind.

Sokhanjali Palei lives in Chitra village in Nimapada Block, Puri district, Odisha, with her husband and two daughters. The family depends on daily wage labour, and for years they lived without a toilet at home.

As her daughters grew older, the lack of a household toilet became increasingly difficult. Sokhanjali worried about their privacy and safety, particularly when they had to go outside early in the morning or after dark. The risks of snakes, insects, and exposure added to the family’s everyday anxiety.

Through the WASH initiative implemented by IGSSS in collaboration with Diageo India, the family was supported to construct a household toilet.

Today, Sokhanjali and her daughters have a safe and private sanitation facility at home. The change has brought greater comfort, security, and dignity to their daily lives—and peace of mind to a mother who once worried every day about her daughters’ safety.

Where water flows, hope grows.

In Bolsa and Salegaon, Nanded, Maharashtra a 3.5-kilometre stretch of Atala Nala is coming back to life. The Atala Nala story is not only about 3.5 km of rejuvenated water infrastructure. It is a story of partnership, participation and ownership—where CSR investment, civil society expertise, government departments and the local community came together to restore a natural water resource. With Diageo India, IGSSS, the District Administration and local communities, a shared vision became action.

1,257 acres of agricultural landscape is rejuvenated.

Together, restoring water, strengthening livelihoods, and nurturing a more resilient future.

From Orchards to Markets: Farmers Growing Their Own Future

For small and marginal apple growers in Wagoora, Baramulla, J&K, good harvests did not always translate into good returns. High commissions, transport costs, intermediaries and price uncertainty often limited farmers’ bargaining power.

With support from NABARD, IGSSS helped establish and strengthen Kandi Apple Producer Company in 2021—enabling farmers to move from individual selling towards collective ownership and stronger market engagement.

Through farm-gate direct marketing, farmer advisory services, soil testing, technical support and organised market linkages, Kandi is helping growers reduce transaction costs and improve access to markets.

• 11,000+ apple boxes QR-coded
📈 The impact is growing:
• 750 farmer shareholders
• ₹5.97 crore turnover in FY 2025–26

Kandi is evolving from an FPO into a farmer-owned business platform, helping growers strengthen their market position and retain greater value from their produce.

Meet Kesar Pachoule from Harsud, Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh—a woman whose journey from building her own livelihood to creating opportunities for others reflects courage, initiative and leadership.

“I earn as much as my husband.” For Kesar, these words reflect a journey of growing confidence, independence and determination.

Her association with IGSSS as a Community Resource Person (CRP) marked a new chapter, enabling her to turn her experience and learning into meaningful action within her community.

Today, she works closely with women and farmers, manages moringa plots, supports the Moringa Enterprise, facilitates market linkages and promotes vermicompost as an income-generating opportunity.

Taking initiative beyond her routine responsibilities, Kesar identifies new markets, explores business opportunities and encourages women to participate in enterprise activities. Through her work, she is helping strengthen local livelihoods while inspiring other women to step forward, build confidence and take leadership in their communities.

Kesar’s journey is a powerful reminder that when women have the opportunity to learn, contribute and lead, they can create positive change not only in their own lives but across their communities. Her dream is to see the Moringa Enterprise succeed and create greater opportunities for women in her community.

From a smoke-filled kitchen to a healthier home.

For Mina Behera, cooking has changed. What was once a daily struggle with smoke, coughing, and eye irritation is now a cleaner, safer, and more comfortable experience.

Through the Mangrove Replenishment Project in Astaranga, Odisha, IGSSS provided Mina’s family with a smokeless stove, reducing indoor air pollution, firewood consumption, and the time and effort spent collecting fuel.

Sometimes, meaningful change begins with something as simple as a better way to cook.

A safe toilet is more than infrastructure—it is a matter of health, dignity and security.

In Sagada Panchayat of Nimapada Block, Puri district, Odisha, IGSSS with the support of Diageo India, has constructed 150 household toilets for vulnerable families, helping communities move towards safer sanitation and healthier living.

Through community participation, awareness and local ownership, the initiative is contributing to reduced open defecation, improved hygiene, greater safety for women and girls, and stronger community resilience.

Together, we are turning sanitation into a pathway for dignity, well-being and lasting community change.

KaniSoz: From Kashmir’s Craft Heritage to Sustainable Livelihoods.

KaniSoz, combining Kani Shawl weaving and Sozni Shawl embroidery, represents IGSSS’s effort to strengthen Kashmir’s traditional handicraft livelihoods through intensive, market-oriented production clusters. The initiative supports Kani shawl weavers and Sozni shawl embroiderers to enhance their skills, productivity, market access and income opportunities, while preserving Kashmir’s rich artisanal heritage and contributing to the local economy.
