Sh Alok Sahay, Secretary General, ISA at the Inaugural Session of CEM India 2026 International Conference & Exhibition on Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems, organised by iForest and International Labmate UK on 10th of March 2026.

CEMS is no longer optional it's the backbone of industrial environmental compliance. From the Clean Air Act era in the 1970s US to India's 2014 CPCB mandate, we've come a long way.

Today, 17 industries including iron & steel must run 24/7 real-time emission monitoring tracking PM, SO₂, NOx, CO, CO₂, NH₃, & O₂.

Take a look at this chart showing the composition of atmospheric air something we all learnt in school:
1. Nitrogen -78%
2. Oxygen-21%
3. Other gases (mostly Argon)-0.96%
4. Carbon Dioxide - just *0.04%*

Now here's the sobering part: *40% of that 0.04% CO₂ is manmade.* If this minuscule fraction is already driving climate change across the globe, imagine what happens if it grows unchecked. This is precisely why continuous emission monitoring matters.

Two areas the CEM equipment industry must prioritize going forward:
• Aerosols, Dust & Particulate Matter (AQI)
• Real-time alarm systems

Congratulations to iForest for this important biannual event bringing global equipment manufacturers and Indian industry together.

The Indian Steel Association (ISA) attended the National Urban & Real Estate Development Conclave (NAREDCO) 2026 today i.e. Feb 13. The conclave highlighted the need for real estate development to take place vertically. This can be ensured only by shifting designs to steel based structure, from the present concrete ones, as steel is also circular and sustainable, durable (long lifecycle) and is a quick delivery solution.

Now a number of steel based structures (commercial complexes) are coming up e.g. Sumitomo reality’s BKC tower in Mumbai, made in all steel skeleton helping in quick delivery of project modern look and with number of other advantages.

A strong foundation for India’s urban growth begins with steel.

India's rapidly expanding metro network—the world's fastest-growing—relies on high-strength, fatigue-resistant steel for its rolling stock. This includes coach bodies, underframes, and load-bearing structures, enabling safe operations amid high passenger loads, frequent acceleration, and urban demands.

Metro coaches demand materials that absorb impacts, endure cyclic stresses, and sustain integrity over decades. Steel provides this optimal strength-durability balance, ensuring reliability over millions of service kilometers.

India as the New Steel Growth Engine

Is the global steel landscape shifting toward a new epicenter?
With 13.2% YoY growth in August 2025, India has decisively decoupled from the global slowdown. While global steel production declined by 1%, India continues to scale at a 6% CAGR.

Driven by strong domestic demand and strategic capacity expansion, steel is emerging as a key enabler of India’s $5 trillion economy vision.

What drives India's steel demand to outpace the world at 9% growth in 2025-26?
World Steel Association forecasts this surge, projecting demand almost 75 Mt above 2020 levels, propelled by robust infrastructure, housing, and automotive sectors.
Government policies like capacity expansion to 300 MT by 2030 align production with rising needs, enhancing self-reliance under Atma Nirbhar Bharat. This trajectory underscores steel's role as the backbone of Viksit Bharat 2047, enabling infrastructure that supports economic expansion and job creation.
India's steel story reflects national resolve—scaling innovation while prioritizing sustainability for long-term prosperity.

The Union Budget 2026 is aligned with the Prime Minister’s focus on investment-led growth. The 22.2% effective increase in capital expenditure, supported by measures to improve logistics and assistance to downstream MSMEs, is expected to sustain infrastructure activity and steel demand.
The allocation of ₹20,000 crore for CCUS and advanced technologies will facilitate decarbonisation and the transition towards low-carbon steel.

We are deeply grateful to the Honourable Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the Parliament Standing Committee for Steel, Coal & Mines, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur , for the insightful session!
We appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate the steel industry's drive toward Aatmanirbharta and discuss critical areas like Green Steel, R&D, Raw Material Security, and Decarbonisation.
This engagement was crucial, reaffirming the industry is strategically aligned to build a globally competitive, self-reliant steel sector for Viksit Bharat 2047.
