Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace An initiative of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness The Dalai Lama

Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace is a South Asian research and training initiative, which facilitates the leadership of women in the areas of peace, security and international affairs. Initiated in 1999 by Meenakshi Gopinath who currently serves as the Director, WISCOMP positions its work at the confluence of peacebuilding, conflict transformation and security studies. The intersec

tion of these with gender concerns provides the focus of its engagement and is the leitmotif that informs its programs. The team comprises Meenakshi Gopinath, Seema Kakran, Manjri Sewak, Nidhi Narain Bhatnagar, among others.

Mallika Joseph (Senior Research Fellow) and Akashleena (Senior Program Officer) represented WISCOMP at the Regional Steering Group Meeting of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) South Asia. This year’s discussions highlighted a crucial reality: peacebuilding cannot be separated from climate action. As the region faces increasingly unpredictable climate challenges, there is an urgent need for approaches that are not only climate-sensitive but also gender-responsive and inclusive.

The meeting brought together diverse voices from across South Asia to exchange strategies on ‘Climate-sensitive peacebuilding’, ‘Gender-responsive adaptation & resilience’, Regional collaboration for sustainable peace. This remains central to our commitments towards fosering cultures of sustainable peace and justice in South Asia.

On 25th April 2025, WISCOMP hosted a lecture by Prof. Achyut Chetan, author of Founding Mothers of the Indian Republic, who drew on extensive archives and rare recordings to highlight the central role of women in shaping India’s constitutional vision of democracy, equality, justice, and fraternity.

The session also featured insights from eminent voices including Mr. N.N. Vohra (former Governor of J&K), Justice Gita Mittal (former Chief Justice of J&K High Court), and Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath, who together illuminated the Constituent Assembly as a truly diverse and inclusive space. The discussion touched on contemporary challenges - from the Uniform Civil Code to climate justice - underscoring the enduring relevance of the Founding Mothers’ vision in addressing today’s predicaments.

On 26th April 2025, through the Athena’s Ragas workshops, participants engaged deeply with constitutional values, especially fraternity as the foundation for coexistence. With profound reflections from experts such as Amb. Shyam Saran and Prof. Neera Chandhoke, the sessions explored the Constitution as a living document - bold in its adoption of universal adult franchise, pioneering in its role in shaping the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and visionary in its call for solidarity and constitutional morality.

As part of the initiative curated by Vinay Kumar, innovative methods such as printing the Preamble, art, and memory practices were used to revive constitutional cultures and spark public dialogue.

Against the backdrop of UNESCO’s International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the discussion explored the need for inclusive women led scientific leadership in addressing global challenges like climate change and pandemics.

The conversation offered profound insights into building networks of mentors and allies for women in science, the importance of equity, and the relentless dedication required to excel in scientific fields. This edition of Conversations on Mediation made a powerful case for compassion at the heart of peace mediation.

We were honored to hear from Prabha Sankaranarayan, President & CEO of Mediators Beyond Borders International, who shared insights from her work in Ukraine, Gaza, Colombia, and Syria. She emphasized that mediation is more than settlement or negotiation - it is a transformative process rooted in healing, relationship-building, and sustained engagement.

The dialogue highlighted mediation as a civic skill, relevant not only for legal professionals but also for educators, students, and communities. It underscored the need for proximate peacebuilding, where those most affected by conflict lead the process, and for compassion to be seen not just as a value, but as a strategic practice. 🌿

We are so glad to be back here with our friends in Kashmir! 🍁

WISCOMP was invited by the pioneering GCW, M.A. Road, Srinagar, to conduct a two-day interactive workshop on Strengthening the IC for Zero Tolerance: Strategies for Prevention, Support and Redressal.

We were deeply inspired by the spirited engagement and rich discussion on issues of gender justice in the higher education institutions of Kashmir. A dynamic group of educators from 24 different Government Degree colleges and higher senior secondary schools across the ten districts of the Valley participated in the workshop, along with young Gender Champions.

We look forward to many more opportunities to collaborate in nurturing campuses of equity, inclusion, and gender justice across Jammu and Kashmir. 🌿✨
