An initiative of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness The Dalai Lama

Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace is a South Asian research and training initiative, which facilitates the leadership of women in the areas of peace, security and international affairs. Initiated in 1999 by Meenakshi Gopinath who currently serves as the Director, WISCOMP positions its work at the confluence of peacebuilding, conflict transformation and security studies. The intersection of these with gender concerns provides the focus of its engagement and is the leitmotif that informs its programs. The team comprises Meenakshi Gopinath, Seema Kakran, Manjri Sewak, Nidhi Narain Bhatnagar, among others.

Building Bridges: Youth Leadership and Universal Responsibility 🌱

Disom – The Leadership School is a movement shaping India’s future ‘Servant Leaders’ - political and social - through a lived experience of deep democracy. Youth leaders from across the country, part of this journey, engaged with us in dialogue on youth leadership and universal responsibility.

Coming from diverse underserved and marginalised backgrounds, they have been touring and learning through an immersive program that enables them to engage with civil society initiatives and grassroots movements across the country, deepening their understanding of the workings of Indian democracy. WISCOMP invited participants to reflect on leadership as an act of compassion and interconnectedness - a form of care that extends beyond self, family and nation to embrace the whole of humanity.

The dialogue offered a rich context for participants to reflect on their own journeys of service and leadership, drawing on the diverse geographies and communities they represent - each story returning to a common thread: leadership as service, and change built collectively, from the ground up.

How can South Asia turn climate vulnerability into an opportunity for facilitating greater regional cooperation, social cohesion and human security?

WISCOMP took part in the South Asia Youth Workshop and Regional Conference on Climate, Peace and Security in Kathmandu, Nepal, anchored in our role on the GPPAC South Asia Regional Steering Committee.

• At the Youth Workshop, WISCOMP presented on the intersections of gender, human security and climate sensitive peacebuilding alongside young peacebuilders from across South Asia.

• At the Regional Conference, WISCOMP spotlighted indigenous and traditional knowledge systems as central - not peripheral to climate adaptation and peacebuilding.

Grateful for the conversations with policymakers, diplomats, UN Women representatives, and civil society leaders from across South Asia and beyond, reaffirming our commitment to women’s leadership, youth participation and locally grounded knowledge in climate, peace and security.

WISCOMP, in collaboration with Government College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar, hosted the virtual programme “Screening Change : One Day Sensitization Program on Gender Justice”, engaging 30+ young Gender Champions from 10 colleges across the Valley.

Through short film screenings, an insightful lecture by Prof. Krishna Menon on ‘Women at Work: The Pursuit of Dignity and Freedom’, and an interactive session, participants explored consent, agency, choice, and the critical role of the Internal Committee on Sexual Harassment in building gender-just spaces.

Prithvi Darshana: Revitalizing Indigenous Epistemes for Sustainable Futures

A pathbreaking, one‑of‑its‑kind symposium — through its methodologies, formats, learning outcomes, and insights — truly transformed how climate change pedagogies are approached in higher education. It centred indigenous knowledge production, foregrounded existing practices, and highlighted community‑based, women‑led resilience, mitigation, and adaptation strategies. Moving away from statist views of the Anthropocene, it invited an “earthworm’s view” to unpack seeds as living archives of memory and resilience.

Climate, gender, peace, and security remain urgent priorities and shared concerns. A few
