What does it take to create psychologically safe spaces for adolescent girls?

At UNICEF India’s Evidence for Children Roundtable 2026, SwaTaleem Foundation brought evidence from our work in the KGBV residential school system to a cross-sector conversation on girls’ mental health, wellbeing, and agency.

For girls living and learning in residential schools, relationships matter deeply—whether with wardens, peers, parents, or themselves.

Our evaluation found encouraging shifts:
✨ Girls found wardens more approachable
🤝 Peer relationships strengthened
💪 Self-confidence increased
💬 Girls felt more comfortable sharing emotions
👨‍👩‍👧 Parents reported more communication with their daughters and wardens

At the same time, the evidence reminds us that relationships and behaviours can shift before broader social norms do. Meaningful change takes time—and our measurement and programme timelines need to reflect that.

The conversation reinforced an important learning for us: We don’t always need to build new systems for girls. We need to strengthen the systems and relationships already around them.

📚 Two-Day Foundational English Workshop with Haryana Teachers

Our Foundational English (FE) Program grew out of what we saw in KGBVs: girls sitting in classrooms years ahead of where their English actually was. We built FE to give these girls the scaffolding and confidence they need to catch up.

On August 6-7, 2026 in Karnal, Haryana, 104 government English teachers experienced the FE programme as learners. We began by asking what makes English difficult in their classrooms. They named the gap before we did and shared how they had been working around it for years without a tool to address it.

Why is English important today? Every teacher had an answer. The next question is: what stands between a girl and that answer? Often, it is fear of making mistakes. FE treats girls as English beginners and uses listening, speaking, interactive activities, and songs to build confidence, self-esteem, and vocabulary. You cannot remove fear by correcting someone. You remove it by starting with what they already know and letting them build from there.

Grateful to every teacher who spent two days being a beginner again.

"Simon says… act like a boy. Simon says… act like a girl."

We opened our two-day workshop with first-year DIET students with that ice-breaker. No explanation. Just a pause. The room answered without a word, and that was the point.

Over two days at DIET RK Puram, 45 future teachers sorted everyday chores into "boy / girl / both" and discussed them. They mapped their own childhoods — the toys given, the chores assigned, the freedoms allowed — and watched two very different sets of rules appear on the board. They audited textbook chapters for who leads, who earns, who cares.

Then we sat with the question at the heart of it all. A gender-responsive teacher asks: how do we respond to gender-based barriers? A gender-transformative teacher asks: why do these barriers exist, and how do we change the norms that create them?

Encouraging girls to speak widens access within the existing norm. Asking why boys dominate the room changes the norm itself. Everyone left with three commitments: one practice to START, one assumption to STOP, one pattern to NOTICE. These are the teachers who will walk into government classrooms in a few years. What they notice will shape what children believe they are allowed to become.

At SwaTaleem Foundation, we're conducting a baseline survey across 33 KGBVs in Haryana, reaching 2,500+ adolescent girls and 100+ wardens and teachers.

This year, we've made our surveys smarter by digitising data collection on tablets, pre-loading student information, and streamlining the survey experience. These improvements have reduced errors, improved efficiency, and made it easier for our field teams to collect high-quality data.

Because the strongest programmes are built on strong evidence—and every improvement behind the scenes helps us create better outcomes for girls.

📊 What does it take to build evidence at scale?

At SwaTaleem Foundation, we're conducting our first in-house baseline assessment across KGBVs in Karnataka, where our programmes reach 18,000+ adolescent girls.

Behind every dataset are months of preparation—designing tools, selecting representative samples, training teams, and travelling to some of the state's most remote schools. So far, our team has travelled 1,200+ km to reach 1,054 girls.

For us, evidence isn't just about measuring impact—it's about improving it. Strong evaluation helps us stay connected to girls' lived realities, learn what works, and make better decisions as we grow.

Because meaningful change starts with listening, learning, and continuously improving.
