Understanding the Indian Temple Architecture: A Basic Introduction to Temple Forms and Their Development

CURRICULUM:
Day 1: Introductory and Interactive Session Understanding the perceptions/notions of the participants regarding temple and its aspects. An introduction to Temple Architecture and its antiquity with historical approaches.

Day 2: Looking into Nagara and Dravida Styles A thorough discussion on the forms of Nagara and Dravidian architerural styles. Understanding their originality in early architecture.

Day 3: Other Aspects of the Architecture An introduction to other forms and how we can analyse a temple with all possible approaches that comprise of philosophy.

Day 4: Presentation by Participants The participants are expected to do a short presentation on any chosen temple of theirs to reproduce their understanding of temple architecture during the course. The presentation should not exceed 10 minutes of span.

EXPECTED OUTCOME:
Temple architecture can be understood from various perspectives to learn temple entity as a whole. This three days course implies on understanding the fundamentals of temple architecture with all possible approaches that can help a researcher in further researches, and an enthusiast to have a solid base for further studies.

All the sessions will be conducted with presentations. PDF files of handouts, per session will be provided along with suggested readings.

About the expert:
Dr Prabhudesai is an eclectic personality with interests and expertise ranging from Applied Arts to English literature to Indology and ancient Indian history and culture. His research field encompasses temple architecture, iconography, Shaivism and Shaktism. He did his PhD on Religious Ideas from Early Medieval Kolhapur with particular reference to Shaivism and Shaktism from Deccan College PGRI, Pune and the research has been now published under the title, 'The Rise of Mahalakshmi cult in the Deccan: A Goddess of power, kingdom and salvation'.
His early work 'Temples of Kolhapur' has received a great response in the libraries from US, UK, Switzerland ans France. He also has published his primary research on Kolhapur Mahalakshmi under the title 'Shri Mahalakshmi Samagra Darshan'.

Day 1- Introduction and Case Study 1- Mallavidya/Grappling/Kushti
Day 2- Capoeira- An Afro-Brazilian Dance cm Martial Art
Day 3- Vale Tudo and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)

Mallavidya/Grappling/Wrestling/ Kushti - India has a very rich martial tradition of mud wrestling and one can trace it all the way back to the Ancient/Early Historic Art and Literature.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian Martial Art and a Dance form which evolved as a form of a resistance to the Portuguese oppression over the Afro-Brazilian plantation slaves.

MMA or Mixed Martial Arts is the most followed and watched sport in the world. It is a sport with its own rule set that involves fighters to learn multiple martial disciplines like Muay Thai, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Aims and Objective-
• Explore various Research Methodologies to study aspects of Tangible and Intangible Culture
• Understand various aspects involved in the formulation of various research questions and hypotheses.
• Equip students with tools and experience to create their own RM on topics and fields of Physical Culture.

About Dr Kush
Kush holds a PhD in Ancient Indian Culture, History and Archaeology titled ‘An Icongraphic Study of Sculptures of Grappling and Pugilism of the Vijayanagara Monuments’ from Deccan College, Pune. He has close to a decade of work experience in the K12 Education and Cultural Research fields as a Teacher, Teacher Trainer, Pedagogue, Curriculum Designer, Excavator, Researcher and Content Writer. Kush did his Teach For India Fellowship in Delhi in the year 2011, where he taught primary class of 29 3rd Graders in Seelampur. In the research field, Kush has multiple articles published in various international peer-reviewed journals, he has attended excavations at Rakhigarhi, Talpada, Math Pimpri, Gorewada and Phanigiri. He was also a Senior Research Fellow on the Ancient DNA project on Rakhigarhi funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Kush has also written commercially for E-Commerce Art Galleries and Spanish Websites. Kush has also been a part of the organizing team of Crosstrain Fight Club where along with his Grappling Coach, he has organized Reebok Fight Night and ADCC India Nationals. In 2022, Kush founded Vratya Foundation with the aim of creating credible content on Indian Culture for Indian children and youth and as a pilot he has written a graphic novel on Vijayanagara titled ‘Bisnaga: A Legacy Etched in Stone’.
