: World Day against Trafficking in Persons

Over the years, the evolution of the digital space in India has offered multiple opportunities to human traffickers to use the online medium while facilitating the process of luring victims into sexual exploitation.

In a very recently reported incident of a cyber-enabled human trafficking case, four girls from Kolkata and two from Malda were found using a mobile application to learn Korean for the past 10 months, under a trainer based in Kolkata, with the plea that they would travel to South Korea to meet the BTS band and other K-pop band members.

However, it was later discovered that there was a network of traffickers involved in the training that was trafficking the minor girls to Bhutan via the border town of Jaigaon. The incident was reported when the two girls from Malda reached Siliguri and were stopped by law enforcement and Shakti Vahini.

With the theme of this year's World Day against Trafficking in Persons being "Trapped behind the Scam", it is essential to acknowledge the evolution of trafficking in cyberspace and reach out to young students to raise awareness of the risks and harms in the digital space. There is a critical need for comprehensive awareness programs in schools to educate students about online grooming and cyber safety and to immediately report incidents to break the organised network of traffickers.

Understanding the critical role of raising awareness among children, on World Day against Trafficking in Persons, across Siliguri, Just Rights for Children & Shakti Vahini organised a series of awareness programs in schools to warn students about the growing threat of cyber-enabled human trafficking and the strategies traffickers now use to target children through social media.

In a recent incident reported in Dakshin Dinajpur district, the child marriage of a 14-year-old Anisha (name changed) was swiftly prevented by police officials, after the information was reported to the Child Helpline.

As per the information received, Anisha, a Class VIII student, had been living with her aunt after her parents' separation. When both her parents got remarried, they barely had time to dedicate to her well-being that made her feel isolated, and the lack of a stable family environment forced her aunt to arrange her marriage to a 23-year-old man from the same district.

After the information was reported by one of the neighbours to the Child Helpline, the police immediately intervened with the support of a Para-Legal Volunteer and Shakti Vahini and stopped the child marriage from taking place. After the intervention, immediate support was provided to Anisha and her aunt by facilitating the process of ensuring their access to government welfare schemes so that she could continue her education in a safe environment.

Rescue Alert: A 15-year-old minor girl from Nepal was rescued by SSB officials at the Indo-Nepal Panitanki border

A 15-year-old minor girl from Nepal was recently rescued from a suspected cross-border human trafficking attempt at the India-Nepal Panitanki Border in Siliguri, following the timely intervention of the SSB forces.

During the time of intervention, the minor girl was accompanied by the suspected accused, a resident of Uttar Dinajpur district, West Bengal, who came in contact with the minor girl, only two days before the incident, while working at a garage near her residence in Nepal.

As per the information received, the victim lost her mother at a very young age and was residing in Nepal with her friend's family, after her father, along with her step-mother, left the country for a job, 10 years ago, losing all contact with the victim. The accused lured the victim with false promises and asked her to come to India with him.

During the routine checking by the SSB officials with the support of Shakti Vahini, the minor girl was immediately rescued while she was being brought to India by the accused. Following the rescue, her custody was immediately handed over to the local police, and Shakti Vahini ensured that the victim had access to all necessary care and protection.

Over the years, in its partnership with the border forces, Shakti Vahini has observed that the border areas are the regions most vulnerable to reporting incidents of cases. These regions are often exploited by traffickers on both sides of the border to exploit the vulnerabilities of the population for the purpose of exploitation.

As a response agency, Shakti Vahini continues to work with the border agencies to identify the suspected cases of and to ensure that immediate support and assistance is being provided to the victims of exploitation to break the organised crime network of human traffickers in India.

A quick verification by the team revealed that preparations were already underway, the pandal was set up, wedding guests had started arriving, and the minor girl was being readied for the ceremony.

Police officials also sensitized the gathering, including guests, the makeup artist, and decorators, about the legal consequences and the serious impact of child marriage. They were informed that not only the families but every individual participating in the marriage was responsible & accountable.

Child marriage deprives children, especially girls, of their fundamental rights to education, health, and a safe childhood. It often leads to early pregnancies, increased health risks, and limited opportunities for personal and economic growth. Taking immediate action against child marriage is essential to ensure that children are provided the opportunity to grow, learn, and make informed choices about their futures, contributing to healthier families and stronger communities.

Shakti Vahini continues to work towards preventing child marriage in India with the support of the local authorities & raising awareness among local communities to ensure community mobilization. With a coordinated approach, we are hopeful to achieve the goal of .
