Swift action by Shakti Vahini and police prevents child marriage in North 24 Parganas
On 19 April, Shakti Vahini received information about a child marriage involving a 17-year-old girl in the North 24 Parganas district. A quick verification by the team revealed that preparations were already underway, the pandal was set up, wedding guests had started arriving, and the minor girl was being readied for the ceremony.
Ensuring urgent action, the information was immediately shared with the local police. Their swift and coordinated response ensured that the marriage was stopped in time. Police officials also sensitized the gathering, including guests, the makeup artist, and decorators, about the legal consequences and the serious impact of child marriage. They were informed that not only the families but every individual participating in the marriage was responsible & accountable.
Child marriage deprives children, especially girls, of their fundamental rights to education, health, and a safe childhood. It often leads to early pregnancies, increased health risks, and limited opportunities for personal and economic growth.
