The lecture titled Military Heritage of India: Origin and Diffusion of Gunpowder Technology in India – An Archaeological Perspective by Dr. Tejas Aruna Madan Garge concluded successfully.

The lecture explored the transformative role of fi****ms and artillery in reshaping medieval Indian warfare and the defence architecture. Revisiting established narratives surrounding the introduction of gunpowder technology in India, Dr. Garge highlighted significant archaeological and literary evidence pointing towards multiple centres and phases of its diffusion prior to Babur’s use of artillery in the First Battle of Panipat in 1526.

Drawing upon recent archaeological discoveries from the west coast of India, the Deccan, and Assam, the lecture examined the role of coastal powers, the Portuguese, Bahamanis, and regional kingdoms in the early adoption and development of cannon technology. The discussion also shed light on the evolution of medieval artillery traditions and the remarkable surviving examples of cannons found across the forts of the Deccan.
