Happy World Day for Safety and Health at Work!

A safe and healthy working environment is a fundamental principle and right at work.

Long working hours, workplace stress, violence and harassment, low pay, and job insecurity - to name just a few - can take a serious toll on both physical and mental health. These are known as psychosocial risk factors.

To mark the occasion, the ILO Country Office for India spoke with people in New Delhi, together with its Occupational Safety and Health & Labour Inspection Specialist, about psychosocial risks.

Japan’s senior delegation recently visited India to see the impact of its partnership with the ILO in India in tackling child labour, advancing formalization and promoting gender equality.

In Koderma, they met women mica workers accessing social protection and strengthening their voice through the ILO-supported Workers’ Information Support Center.

In Patna, they met former domestic workers who, with ILO and INTUC support, have launched a women-run tiffin service and are forming Bihar’s first state-level women’s cooperative.

The visit reaffirmed the strong Japan-India partnership and shared commitment to decent work and social justice.

Domestic workers deserve recognition, dignity and decent work.

In Kerala, the ILO has partnered with the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) to strengthen rights, access to justice and skills for domestic workers.

Across eight districts, a network of para-legal volunteers is helping workers facing violence and harassment seek justice. At the same time, engagement with residential welfare associations and employers’ organizations is fostering dialogue and awareness.

In two districts, skills collectives are supporting domestic workers to upskill in elderly and bedside care - increasing their income and recognition as skilled care professionals.

This initiative is part of the ILO’s Promoting rights and social inclusion through organization and formalization (PRS) – Phase 2 project. Supported by the Government of Japan, the project advances rights, formalization and gender equality for workers across India, Nepal and Pakistan.

Decent work means dignity, protection and opportunity for all.

India’s employers’ and workers’ organizations have taken an important step toward advancing Responsible Business Conduct (RBC) for decent work with the presentation of a Bipartite Roadmap in New Delhi, in the presence of ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo.

Developed through a year-long structured dialogue process, the roadmap outlines joint priorities and actions to promote fair employment practices, occupational safety and health, non-discrimination, social protection, and support for green and digital transitions - across enterprises, including MSMEs.

The initiative demonstrates how meaningful social dialogue can translate shared priorities into practical cooperation, strengthening industrial relations and supporting sustainable and inclusive growth.

Six employers’ organizations and six workers’ organizations have already committed to action, with more expected to join.

is proud to support this milestone with support from Japan.

The ILO supports India in its efforts to strengthen fair and skills-based migration pathways from India’s Northeast to the European Union.

The ILO, under the EU-India Cooperation and Dialogue on Migration and Mobility (CDMM-II) Project, recently convened the Linking India-EU Migration Opportunities with the Northeast Corridor (LINC) Workshop in Guwahati, Assam.

Organized in partnership with the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) - and with the support of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of Assam, and the EU Delegation to India and Bhutan, the State Engagement Programme brought together key stakeholders from government, academia, industry, and the recruitment and skilling ecosystem.

The discussions focused on:
🔹 Addressing region-specific challenges and opportunities for international migration
🔹 Strengthening skills anticipation tools
🔹 Enhancing skills and labour market alignment
🔹 Promoting responsible pre-departure preparation for aspiring migrants from India’s Northeast

The discussions showcased the project’s technical tools and knowledge resources, supporting evidence-based and inclusive migration governance.

Through the CDMM-II Project, the ILO and its partners continue to advance safe, orderly, and fair migration between India and the European Union, ensuring that mobility contributes to decent work and shared prosperity. 🇮🇳🤝🇪🇺
