Absolutely heartbreaking, and who is to blame?...human callousness and apathy on the part of the administration...severe negligence in safety measures and rescue efforts, with the father of the victim helplessly witnessing the tragic final moments and crying for help. the victim's car veered off the road due to dense fog, and a lack of barricades and absence of reflectors led to his car falling into a deep, water-filled excavation pit. He survived for nearly 80-90 minutes but couldn't be rescued as rescue teams cited cold water and hazards. there are several key questions left answered

· Why Was the Dangerous Pit Unprotected? Despite previous complaints from residents and a similar incident 10 days prior, no barricades, warning signs, or reflectors were installed around the deep excavation, according to reports.
· Was the Rescue Operation Delayed? The victim's family and eyewitnesses claim Yuvraj remained trapped for nearly two hours, pleading for help, while rescue teams (police and fire department) arrived around 2:30 AM but did not enter the water until after 3:20 AM, with claims they lacked proper diving equipment.
· Why Were Professional Divers Not Immediately Deployed? The victim's father alleged that officials at the spot refused to step into the freezing, deep water, waiting for specialized teams instead of taking immediate action.

· Why Did Previous Safety Warnings Go Unheeded? Residents reported that local authorities had been repeatedly warned about the hazardous, uncovered pit.
· Why Was the Area Not Properly Secured After the Initial Incident? A similar, earlier incident where a truck driver narrowly escaped at the same spot was not followed by safety improvements.

The administrative response of sacking a junior official and filing an FIR against the builders is not enough and is just the beginning of a long, unending process where the helpless father will be left to deal with legal tangles and live through this tragedy countless times.....

when it comes to underage drinking Proxy buying is often a challenge, as was pointed out during our PIL hearing in Supreme Court of India by Justice Gavai"What can we do? Instead of going directly to buy, they can send their servants to buy.” as mentioned in Business Standard

That's why as part of a strong mechanism to check underage drinking besides seeking mandatory age checking at alochol points of sale we are also seeking penalties for adults proxy buyers who procure/ buy or provide alochol to underage consumers

Excise policies with regards to alcohol sale across the country are being liberalized at par with western countries , thus creating a need for having similar checks and balances in place on the same lines.

A robust system in place now will ensure that many more incidents like those in hashtag and Pune are prevented

Any opinions or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated

The harrowing hashtag is yet another reminder of the deathly consequences of the cocktail of youth and alcohol ....be it the Pune or the Mumbai case or the current one...young people in India have little know-how of the dangerous consequences of excessive alcohol consumption and the resultant drunk driving and the ecosystem is built in way to make the availability of alcohol easier for the young and even more easier for the young and the affluent..

Many may argue that the legal drinking age in Uttarakhand is 21 and only two of the victims were underage ...but were the others sensitized about the recklessness alcohol brings with it or how much is too much...or drunk driving is a bad idea... I doubt

And that is precisely what our recent PIL (Public Interest Litigation) in Supreme Court of India is seeking: a system in place to check that young people are sold and served alcohol with caution , their age is checked and the state, the alcohol sellers, the bartender and the entire system takes onus to prevent underage drinking and driving ....as is explained in this coverage by The Times of India Times Now Marathi TIMES NOW Uttarakhand Police Supreme Court of India Supreme Court of India Judgments PMO India Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 Nitin Gadkari

SC notice to Centre on plea for robust policy for establishing a mandatory age verification system at all points of alcohol sale across country. Direct mandatory biometric age-match checks at liquor vends, bars, pubs and other watering holes, says PIL., India News News - Times Now
