Peace is more than the absence of . It grows through , , and the everyday relationships that hold together.

This year's theme, “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” calls upon us to recognise as a shared and continuous responsibility. Investing in peace means strengthening local institutions, creating space for women’s leadership and enabling communities to address through dialogue and collective action.

PRIA’s Hindi publication, Peace and Social Cohesion (शांति और सद्भाव), examines peace from this community-centred perspective. It explores the role of in strengthening social and highlights how women contribute to building relationships, resolving differences and sustaining cohesion within families and communities.

The publication also reflects on the social, economic and institutional challenges that can weaken harmony. It emphasises that peace cannot be created by institutions alone—it requires active participation, mutual , responsibility and cooperation among people from different social .

Its message remains deeply relevant today: lasting peace is built from the ground up when local institutions are responsive, women’s voices are recognised, and communities are empowered to address divisions collectively.

On this International Day of Peace, let us invest in people, participation and community-led efforts that make peace possible—for everyone, everywhere, every day.

On the , we reflect on what makes democracy meaningful in people’s everyday lives.

The concept and practice of has travelled a long way — from its early place in development discourse to becoming an increasingly important part of democratic governance. Yet, while participation has been in many ways, much of it has remained rather than meaningful practice.

It is in this context that the Global Charter on Right to Participation in Local Democratic Governance was initiated — with the vision of deepening citizen participation in local democracy by scaling up, mainstreaming and institutionalising participation across all spheres of democratic governance.

As part of this process, PRIA, together with partner organisations in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, organised consultations with organisations, activists and citizen leaders to explore what authentic participation means, where spaces for participation exist, what enables or prevents it, and how the voices of , youth and other and groups can be meaningfully included in local democratic processes.

The consultations also examined citizen participation in basic service delivery, and natural resource management — recognising that democracy is experienced not only through , but through the decisions and institutions that shape people’s everyday lives.

For PRIA, participation is at the heart of democratic governance.

Because democracy cannot truly work for all when participation remains limited to a few.

Literacy is more than and , it is a pathway to participation, agency, informed decision-making, empowerment and inclusion.

As we mark the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day, UNESCO’s theme, “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity,” reminds us of literacy’s vital role in building more equitable and societies.

At PRIA, literacy and learning have always been understood as pathways to and . Our work has been grounded in the belief that people’s everyday experiences and knowledge are valuable, and that learning can enable individuals and communities to better understand, engage with and shape the decisions that affect their lives.

This perspective has shaped Pria India’s work with communities, officials, development practitioners and academicians over the decades. Since the 1980s, our approach to learning and capacity building has emphasised participation, dialogue, reflection and lived experience, placing learners and their realities at the centre of the learning process.

Our engagement with and non-formal education, including through India’s National Literacy Mission (1988), was part of this broader commitment to making learning more participatory, accessible and meaningful.

Read Dr. Rajesh Tandon’s reflections on PRIA’s journey with literacy and learning - https://pria.org/blog/democracy-for-all/story-of-literacy/3091

Today, this commitment continues across PRIA’s work: making knowledge , valuing diverse forms of knowledge, and enabling people to learn, participate and exercise greater agency.

The 6th cohort of the Climate Democracy Accelerator has successfully completed its online training and support program!

Over the course of the program, participants have explored the intersections of climate action and democracy and developed context-specific action plan towards more just, inclusive and participatory responses to the climate crisis. As the in-country lead for India, PRIA provided mentorship, guidance and support to selected participants from India, Armenia and Nepal.

On 03rd September, participants from across the globe came together to reflect on their journey, present their action plans, and receive valuable feedback from experts and peers.

Now, as they move to implementation, we look forward to seeing their ideas translate into meaningful action within their communities and contexts.

Congratulations to the entire 6th cohort of the Climate Democracy Accelerator on completing the programme!

We wish you all the very best as you take your plans forward and turn your ideas into action. We can't wait to see what comes next!
