On 7th March, commemorating the International Women’s Day, the Martha Farrell Foundation, in collaboration with Raksera Gram Panchayat, organised Swabhiman Sammaan in Raksera village, Panipat, celebrating and honouring thirteen grassroots champions whose efforts are strengthening girls’ education, preventing child marriage, challenging harmful practices, and supporting survivors of violence.
The programme brought together community members, local government, sarpanch, local media, and distinguished guests including Renu Bhatia, Chairperson of the Haryana State Commission for Women; Varsha Sharma, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority; Rajni Gupta, Protection cm Child Marriage Prohibition Officer of Panipat; and Dr. Rajesh Tandon, Founder - President of .india and Chairperson of the Martha Farrell Foundation. The dignitaries honoured local changemakers and reaffirmed the importance of community-led action for gender justice building strong roots for grassroots leadership to grow in Haryana.
Addressing the gathering, Varsha Sharma emphasised that the “true roots of women’s empowerment lie in India’s villages”, referring to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s belief that the progress of a community is measured by the progress achieved by its women.
Cultural performances, a street play on violence against women, and the sharing of findings from a Participatory Safety Audit by adolescents from the govt. schools where MFF and it’s partner organisation, intervenes, through sports, further encouraged dialogue and community participation.
The programme concluded with a closing note by Dr. Rajesh Tandon who emphasises on continuing to support grassroots leadership.
