A gesture, a look, a movement, a sign, a picture, writing, AAC, or a communication device can all be ways of expressing thoughts, choices, feelings, and needs.

But having a way to communicate is only the beginning.

True communication also means being heard.

It means having the opportunity to say no, ask for help, make choices, disagree, change your mind, share an opinion—and know that your communication will be taken seriously.

For people who communicate differently, meaningful inclusion requires more than teaching communication skills. It asks all of us to become better communication partners: to listen, allow processing time, provide accessible information, learn different ways of communicating, and create environments where every person can participate.

Because the goal is not to make everyone communicate like us.

The goal is to create a world where everyone has a way to communicate—and where their communication matters.

Cooking is an important everyday skill, and today our vocational sessions were all about hands-on learning, teamwork and enjoying the process. From preparing ingredients to getting involved in the cooking, every step was an opportunity to practise skills that support greater independence in everyday life.
