“We have a great future ahead of us as a country if you have young women like this.”

Ashok Alexander from spent time with our Girl Icons and Saathi Leaders from rural Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh — and this is what he said afterward.

Adolescent girls eading peer groups in their own communities. Negotiating. Speaking clearly about their futures.

That’s the Girl Icon program. Built on one belief: that these girls are already leaders.

Thank you, Ashok, and the Antara Foundation team. Grateful for the visit, and for the generosity of what you said.

A few months ago, during Milaan’s Mulaqaat, Vaishnavee and Khushi found out they had been selected for the U-GO Ambassador Program, and would be travelling to Cambodia.

That moment of surprise soon became a journey.

At the U-GO Global Summit in Cambodia, they represented India, Milaan, and the leadership of girls whose voices deserve to be heard on every stage — local, national, and global.

From vision to action.
From India to Cambodia.
From access to leadership.

Barkha grew up in a village in Varanasi where girls’ education wasn’t a priority. Not because families didn’t care for it, but because poverty, early marriage, and rigid social structures made everything else more urgent.

Through Milaan’s Girl Icon Program, she didn’t just gain access to a smartphone or an email ID. She completed 30 leadership sessions. She facilitated 30 peer group meetings. She learned to build arguments, mobilise peers, and speak with authority. And then she went and did exactly that — at the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

She’s now studying law.

On , we’re not talking about girls learning to code. We’re talking about girls learning to lead, and using every tool available, digital and otherwise, to do it.

97% of Girl Icons have smartphone access. 92% report increased leadership confidence. The numbers matter. But what they represent matters more: a generation of girls who are not waiting to be included in the future. They’re already shaping it.

The digital future is not built only in labs. It’s shaped by who has the agency to participate.

The 16 Days of Activism call attention to the forms of violence girls face, including the ones that take place quietly in digital spaces. Impersonation is one such harm, where someone uses a girl’s photos, name, or identity to mislead, harass, or deceive others. It undermines safety, trust, and the confidence with which girls navigate online platforms.

Understanding how to respond can make all the difference. Reporting the fake account, blocking the impersonator, saving evidence, and informing family and close contacts helps prevent further harm, especially financial traps or misuse of personal information.

As we move through these 16 days, we continue raising awareness on digital safety and the everyday actions that help girls protect their identity and participate online with confidence and control.

The 16 Days of Activism call attention to the forms of violence girls face, not only offline, but in their digital lives as well. Cyberstalking is one of the most distressing forms of online harm. It creates fear, restricts how girls express themselves, and often forces them to shrink their presence in spaces that should feel safe and open.

For many girls, the impact is long-lasting: constant monitoring, unwanted contact, and repeated intrusion can affect mental wellbeing, confidence, and the way they participate online.

Today, we are sharing a story from the ground. One of our Girl Icon alumni experienced persistent cyberstalking that disrupted her daily life. Instead of withdrawing, she chose to take action, documenting the behavior, and reaching out for support. Her courage reflects the power of awareness and solidarity.

Our Norec Exchange for Change participants are also actively contributing by spreading awareness and deepening conversations around digital safety in their ongoing sessions.

As we continue through these 16 days, we stand with girls who speak up about online harm and continue working toward digital spaces where every girl can participate with confidence and control.

The 16 Days of Activism call us to confront the many forms of violence women and girls face, including the ones unfolding quietly online. Cyberbullying shapes how girls participate, express themselves, and imagine their future in digital spaces.

This week, our Norec Exchange of Change participants are engaging in thoughtful conversations to unpack what cyberbullying looks like, why it matters, and how young people can support each other with awareness and empathy. They are strengthening digital safety skills and building a deeper understanding of how to respond when harm occurs.

In this global movement, we stand with millions advocating for digital spaces where every girl can participate with confidence and dignity.

Today marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls. As violence expands into online spaces, the urgency grows. In India alone, reports of online crimes against women have increased by more than 118%, rising from 22,188 cases in 2020 to 48,475 in 2024.

Digital violence changes the way girls show up online, limiting confidence, expression, and opportunity. It affects participation, relationships, wellbeing, and in many cases, the future girls imagine for themselves. Through our work, we create learning spaces where girls gain digital safety skills, recognise harmful online behaviour, and support each other with empathy and awareness.

In this global movement, we join millions raising their voices for safer, more equal digital spaces for all women and girls.

Celebrating Aakansha Mudgal, a Milaan Girl Icon alumna, as she graduates from the SBI Youth for India Fellowship, a significant milestone in her journey of learning and leadership.

Her year in rural Odisha offered real exposure to grassroots development, strengthened her problem-solving skills, and helped her build clarity about the impact she wants to create. The fellowship not only expanded her perspective but also deepened her commitment to working closely with communities.

As Aakansha begins her professional journey with Gram Vikas, she carries forward the values shaped at Milaan and the experience gained through the SBI fellowship.

Proud of her progress and excited to see the contribution she will continue to make. ✨💙

Earlier this month, our team member Monika and Girl Icon alumna and U-Go Scholar Divyanshi travelled to Hong Kong for a fundraising gala. ✨🌏

For Divyanshi, standing there and sharing her story was a reflection of how far education can carry a young girl when she’s given a fair chance. She spoke about her journey, the challenges her family faced, and the dreams she is now able to chase because someone believed in her potential.

When a girl goes to college, she strengthens her family, shifts the way her community thinks, and creates possibilities for generations ahead.

The U-Go scholarship is doing exactly that, helping young women continue their education, dream bigger, and build lives filled with dignity, choice, and opportunity. 💛📚

We are truly proud of our team for carrying these stories to a global space and showing what the power of education can look like in one girl’s life. ✨

Last week, our Unmukt adolescents celebrated National Education Day with activities across Reusa and Sidhauli. They took part in poster-making, watched inspiring films, and held group discussions on why education matters in their lives.

The adolescents shared how learning helps them build confidence, make informed choices, and understand their own strengths. One of them expressed it simply: “Education helps me see a better future for myself.”

The celebrations ended with a shared belief that education can shape a brighter tomorrow for every child. ✨📚

Children’s Day across our Unmukt villages came alive with colour and cheer as adolescents led a joyful Baal Mela filled with games, music, and handmade stalls.

Every corner echoed with excitement, every child found a space to explore, create, and feel seen.
A day as bright as their dreams, and a beautiful celebration of childhood in its truest form. ✨💛
