Ina Raja Memorial Education Trust

Ina Raja Memorial Education Trust An Indian Non-Profit Organization with a dream to provide basic education to underprivileged children The problems dont end with the schools themselves.

Ina Raja Memorial Education Trust (IRMET) came into being on 29th of January 1997. Born out of a personal tragedy in June 1996, the Trust has since then assumed a life of its own. IRMET has been working in an independent capacity for the last 24 years to supplement the efforts of the state education system. While the children remain enrolled in state schools they are encouraged to spend their time

outside school, hours at the Center run by the Trust, away from the vagaries of the street. A majority of the children who come to the Trust are officially enrolled in state run schools, which are the only education option for the urban poor in India. The problems associated with state run schools are numerous and well documented. These schools suffer from insufficient material resources, inept management and a generally unmotivated teaching staff. Consequently, they have a large dropout rate beyond the primary school and are notorious for their inability to inculcate even simple literacy skills in their students, even after five to six years of schooling. After school, the home for most children is the street. The children come largely from migrant families and many dont have a permanent home in the city. Their parents work hourly jobs as domestic helps, construction site labour, rickshaw pullers etc. At night the family returns to a shanty dwelling in urban slums. While starvation is not an issue with these children, the nutrition value of their diet is questionable. The majority of the children that the Trust works with are underfed or chronically malnourished, which severely affects their cognitive abilities. Currently, there are 150 children in the care of the Trust. In 2002, 57% of children that the Trust worked with were academically ranked in top ten among their peers in the public school system. In 2003, that number increased to 68%. The number of students has grown by over twenty percent in the last three years. In 2004, the ratio of boys to girls was roughly 50:50. The introduction of a nutrition plan has contributed to increase in the number of students.

STEM learning session was conducted for students of Classes 4 and 5 on the topic ‘Phases of the Moon.’ The session was led by Mona and Reshu from the primary section. During the activity, students learned about the different phases of the moon through a DIY STEM model. The session began with students assembling the model themselves. Through STEM kits, students were able to clearly observe and understand how the moon changes its appearance during different phases such as the New Moon, Crescent Moon, Half Moon and Full Moon.

A fun activity on ‘Making Gliders’ was conducted for students of Classes 4 and 5. During the session, children assembled their own gliders using the DIY materials provided in the STEM kits. Students worked in groups of 3 to 4. After assembling the gliders, the children tested them by flying them on their own, which created great excitement and joy among the students. Many children initially thought the gliders were airplanes because of their similar appearance, which sparked curiosity about how they actually fly. The teachers then explained the difference between an airplane and a glider, helping students understand the basic concept of flight. Students learned that unlike airplanes, gliders fly without an engine and remain in the air due to air pressure and the shape of t heir wings, which creates lift.

A teacher training session on STEM education was organized at IRMET with the support of smilefoundation. The session was led by Ms. Jyoti Singh, who introduced teachers to the effective use of reusable DIY STEM kits designed for students from Grade 4 to Grade 12. Teachers were guided on how to use these kits to explain scientific concepts in a practical and engaging manner. The session provided first-hand experience to the participants, enabling them to better understand the application of these tools in the classroom. By incorporating these kits into daily teaching practices, teachers can make abstract concepts more understandable, interactive and interesting for students.

We are happy to share a wonderful update!
A dedicated computer lab has now been set up in our Trust Hall, creating a comfortable and engaging space for our students. This initiative was made possible through the generous support of Mr. Raj Beri (UK) and his friends, with the efforts of Mr. Aneu Sood.

Earlier, computer classes were conducted in a constrained kitchen space, where students had to stand while working. The new lab now provides proper seating, tables and essential IT equipment, enabling more effective and comfortable learning.

This initiative is a step towards enhancing digital learning and creating a better environment for IRMET children.

Our Diwali 'Dil Wali craft exhibition, held on 16th October 2025, was a wonderful success. The children’s handcrafted items were appreciated by all visitors. All hand-painted bags were completely sold out and other decorative items along with terracotta products also received an overwhelming response. This is a proud moment for our team and children.

We express our special gratitude to Mrs. Seema Saluja and Mr Jagmohan Saluja for graciously providing the venue space and arranging refreshments and lunch for everyone. Their support helped the event run smoothly and successfully.

This event not only supported fundraising but also boosted the confidence, creativity and learning experience of our children.
