There is something particularly powerful about a mentor who was once a mentee.

Dibyashree Mahapatra from our Kolkata Chapter joined the Udayan Shalini Fellowship in 2016 as a Shalini. By 2021, she had returned as a mentor.

Professionally, Dibyashree holds a Master's in Applied Geology from the University of Calcutta and currently works as a Research Scholar in the Organic Biogeochemistry Lab at Presidency University. She also brings a year of GIS experience from CyberSWIFT Infotech and holds a Diploma in Optometry, conducting eye screenings at camps across the city.

Beyond the world of research, she paints, works with yarn, and dances, a reminder that the people shaping young minds are whole, layered human beings themselves.

We are proud to have her as part of this community.

Motherhood is found in every guiding hand, every protective heart, and every person who chooses to care.

At Udayan Ghars, we see this every day in the love and support from our mentor mothers, caregivers, and lifelong volunteers who create a family for children without parental care.

Since 1996, Udayan Care’s 11 homes have offered a safe and caring space where children get education, emotional support, healthcare, life skills, and, most importantly, the comfort of knowing they are not alone. Since its inception, the program has helped more than 3,029 children build brighter futures.

Udayan Ghar believes in family strengthening by helping children reconnect with and return to their families whenever possible, while ensuring they grow up with care, dignity, and a sense of belonging.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate every woman who is a steady presence in a child’s life and shows them that home is more than a place; it is a feeling.

Happy Mother’s Day.

Immense pride doesn't quite cover it.

Udayan Shalini Fellow Riya Saini, who has been a and Master's student since 2019, recently presented her research at the Supranational Democracy Dialogue 2026 in Italy. She spoke on how culture, education, and youth participation can strengthen democratic values and foster meaningful global conversations.

Her journey embodies what Udayan Care stands for: giving young people the opportunity, exposure, and confidence to step into spaces that matter.

Our sincere gratitude to our Trustees, Dr Kiran Modi. and Meera Sawhny, for consistently creating platforms where youth voices are not just heard but celebrated.

This is what investment in young people looks like.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do for someone is simply show up.
Meet Supriti Rajput, Financial Analyst, BBA graduate from Symbiosis Pune, and for nearly a year now, a mentor to a young girl through the Udayan Shalini Fellowship. But ask Supriti what mentoring has given her, and she'll tell you it goes both ways.

"Watching Shalini slowly gain confidence and ask bigger questions has been incredibly moving." She didn't come to mentoring with grand plans. She came with presence. With empathy. With the belief that consistency and genuine care can change the direction of a life. And in doing so, her own life changed, too. For Supriti, fulfillment has never lived inside a 9-to-5. It lives in the quiet moments — a question asked with more courage than last month, a girl beginning to believe in herself. That's the kind of impact she's here to make.

Stay tuned for more stories from our Mentor Series.

From mentorship to movement — how guidance shapes leadership.

We are deeply grateful to our mentors whose dedication makes these journeys possible, and thankful to Genpact for strengthening the USF mentoring component and walking alongside us in empowering young women through education, employability, and leadership.

From Class 11 classrooms to college campuses, and now into alumnae leadership — this is the power of mentoring at the Greater Noida chapter of Udayan Shalini Fellowship.

As a mentor, Mr. Rtn. DEEPAK SHARMA (Rotarian) shares, “The legacy of supporting and pushing others to do well in their life flourishes in Shalinis. Every young person can not only succeed but also become a Torchbearer for others.”

That belief comes alive in the journeys of our Shalinis.

And the journey does not stop at graduation.

As an alumna, Rimee Raghav (Batch 6) shares that mentoring helped her “grow into an independent and self-aware person.”

Ankita (Batch 5) shares the true snowball effect of mentoring: “This journey helped me become someone who not only focuses on personal success but also on giving back to society.”

This is the progression we celebrate:

Class 11 scholars growing into confident graduates

Graduates evolving into socially conscious alumnae

Mentees become torchbearers for others

When support meets potential, transformation follows.

📣 Aftercare as a Right

Leaving care should not mean losing support. The latest BICON report calls for a paradigm shift: aftercare must be guaranteed as a right, not a favour.

Key priorities include:

📌 Targeted social protection to ensure safe transitions from care, including housing, education, health care, counselling, career guidance and access to employment pathways

📌 Lifelong access to mental health and psychosocial support—because healing does not end at 18

📌 Universal and simplified access to legal identity and personal records, including birth certificates and case files, actively supported by governments and local authorities.

Every young person leaving care deserves dignity, continuity, and the foundations for an independent life.

What happens when children and young people help design the systems meant to support them? Our newly launched report, Children’s Rights, Participation & Inclusion, calls for:

Meaningful participation and co-leadership by care-experienced children and young people

Early and direct engagement with decision-makers—not just after policies are drafted

Stronger collaboration between child-rights and disability actors
Because inclusive care reform starts by listening to those with lived experience.

Twenty years from now, a child will look back and ask — "What did they do when they still had the chance?"

At Udayan Care, we work every day to give children a future worth living. But a future worth living needs a planet worth inheriting.

This , we're reminded that protecting the environment isn't separate from protecting childhood. They are the same fight.

Let's not hand the next generation a world we were too busy to save.
