New Rabies educators in town!!

Our bright and young staff members Bharti and Sonu have shown remarkable enthusiasm and willingness to overcome language barriers to go on and complete their Rabies educator courses from the globally renowned Global Alliance For Rabies Control. They used Google translate to translate the course material from English to Hindi and passed all the module exams to successfully obtain the educator certificate.

Kudos to both Sonu and Bharti, who can now use their expertise and practical on-ground knowledge about Rabies to educate the public and spread awareness on how to prevent it and what precautions and steps one should take if they are ever bitten by a suspected rabid dog.

For 10 years , we scraped and struggled our way through infrastructure we had no say in making. We have endured roof and drainage collapses, rats and the diseases they bring, electrocution and not to mention lakhs of rupees poured into trying to keep this place from falling apart. Till we said, enough is enough. We REFUSE to play along and say it's okay and that this is the best we can do. I have shaken with fear and terror many times over the past year , wondering how on earth we would make it to the finish line. But we did. We tore that crumbling horrid excuse for a building and re built it. All our hard work, tears, blood, sickness, joy , experience was poured into delivering a purpose specific, durable, structure geared to heal and monitor our inhabitants in the best possible way. Earlier, the team held their breath through the day, waiting for trouble. Now we exhale in relief, watching our dogs finally at peace.

Last year, we invested in building a dedicated canine kitchen at our ABC centre.

It may not be common across facilities, but it is essential — for maintaining hygiene, following proper protocols, and ensuring that large-scale sterilisation centres like ours can function safely and efficiently for the dogs in our care.

Today, that kitchen is up and running.
But to keep it going, we need your support.

We are currently looking for bulk food donations for our dogs:
• Rice
• Soya chunks
• Lentils (dal)
• Groundnut cake
• Gur

You can support us either:
– In kind (we will share purchase bills for transparency)
– Direct bulk contributions

In February, Brownie was found in Sehgal Colony after being accidentally run over by a car. The accident left him with multiple fractures in both his hind legs and paralysed, in immense pain and unable to move.

Thankfully, the Bhargava family—who live in the same neighbourhood and are part of our extended Neighbourhood Woof family through our 10-year-old patron —immediately stepped in. They alerted us without delay and helped ensure Brownie was rescued. In an incredibly kind gesture, they also offered to cover the costs of his medicines and surgery, simply because they wanted him to have a chance to heal.

Brownie has now undergone surgery and has begun taking the first small steps on his long road to recovery, starting physiotherapy and slowly rebuilding strength.

When local caregivers and rescuers come together with compassion and urgency and work in tandem with animal welfare NGOs, injured community dogs like Brownie receive the help they need and we take one more step towards harmonious co-existence between humans and animals.

Sifat is turning 10 this year.
And she has a birthday wish.

Instead of gifts, she wants to help provide Bravecto (anti-tick) and deworming tablets for the 60 permanent resident dogs at Neighbourhood Woof.

These medicines are essential to prevent tick-borne diseases and remove harmful parasites — something every dog at the shelter needs regularly to stay healthy.

Many of you already know Sifat through her eco-friendly handmade soaps. Through sales at different events, she has already raised ₹4 lakhs+ to support the dogs here.

This year, if you’re wishing her or thinking of getting her a birthday present, she has a simple request:

Contribute towards these medicines instead.

It would be the birthday gift she truly wants. 🐾

Skilled expertise is often underrated in our work as is teamwork. Both are essential to provide our patients what they need. In the frame is Chetak - who has made remarkable progress with us, as you can see.

Sometimes, just standing back and watching the dogs who’ve landed up at Neighbourhood Woof — through accident or simply by fate — sleep in complete security makes every challenge and sacrifice worth it.

We don’t make a lot of money doing this work. Just enough to cover basic salaries and keep things running. There’s no surplus, no cushion. Sometimes even providing something as simple as safety, food, and rest feels like a war.

But then you look at this.

Full bellies.
Unclenched bodies.
No fear of abuse or a beating.

We may not be rich in money, but we are rich in the happiness you get from watching the creatures you look after sleep in bliss. Watching them dream their happy dreams!
