Papier mâché is one of Kashmir’s most cherished and enduring handicrafts, practiced for centuries and admired by locals and visitors alike. Introduced to the Valley around the 14th century by Persian artisans during the reign of Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin, the craft flourished under royal patronage and became an integral part of Kashmiri culture.

The art involves transforming waste paper into beautiful decorative objects through a meticulous process — paper is soaked, pulped, and mixed with glue to form a malleable material that is then molded, dried, and intricately painted, often with motifs inspired by nature such as chinar leaves, flowers, and birds.

From boxes, vases, and trays to wall panels and ornaments, Kashmiri papier mâché products are prized for their delicate hand-painted designs and rich enamel finishes. The craft has also earned Geographical Indication (GI) status under Application No. 181 for “Kashmir Paper Machie,” granting it legal recognition and protection as a region-specific art form. Today, this timeless craft continues to sustain many Kashmiri artisans and remains a vibrant symbol of the Valley’s creativity, heritage, and enduring artistic spirit.

The centuries-old art of Meenakari — the intricate enamelwork on gold, silver, and copper — is taking its last breaths in Kashmir. Once a symbol of the Valley’s refined craftsmanship, the tradition now teeters on the brink of extinction, with only a handful of artisans left to keep it alive.

Among them is Nazir Ahmad Pahalwan, 72, from Teergaripora, Rajouri Kadal in Srinagar. A devoted craftsman since 1968, Nazir learned the art from his father, the late Ghulam Nabi Pahalwan. Sitting in his modest workshop, he continues to polish and enamel metal pieces whenever he receives a rare order — though those days have become few and far between. “Meenakari work has almost disappeared,” Nazir says. “I rarely get any orders now. It’s hard to survive, but I continue because this is all I know.”

Once flourishing, the craft has witnessed a steep decline over the past 15 years. Many artisans have left the profession, forced to find alternate livelihoods. Even Nazir’s son has chosen to work as a fitter rather than inherit the family legacy. Old Kashmiri Meenakari pieces — adorned with delicate names and motifs — now exist mostly in museums and art collections, reminders of a time when Srinagar’s metalworkers were sought after across India. The process demands precision, patience, and specialized tools — qualities that few young artisans are willing to invest in today.

In the bustling lanes of Srinagar, Saiqa Rashid, an Assistant Engineer at the Power Development Department (PDD), is quietly crafting a world of colour, calligraphy, and meaning. What began as a childhood fascination with mehndi designs and art competitions has evolved into a profound journey of self-expression and spiritual creativity.

Though her artistic pursuits paused as life’s responsibilities took over, the Covid-19 pandemic rekindled her passion. In moments of solitude, Saiqa found solace in paint and ink, transforming her emotions into intricate calligraphic forms and abstract compositions.

Deeply inspired by Kashmir’s natural beauty and cultural richness, her work reflects the delicate balance between tradition and modernity. Through acrylics, ink, and bold colours, she reinterprets Islamic art and motifs, blending them with contemporary sensibilities. “Art is a language of the soul,” she says. “Each stroke carries a piece of my heart and my homeland.”

Saiqa’s art — marked by intricate details and meditative patterns — mirrors both her engineering precision and her creative spirit. She hopes to one day exhibit her work nationally and internationally, using it to build bridges of understanding across cultures.

Her story is a reminder that passion never truly fades — it simply waits for the right moment to bloom again. Through her art, Saiqa Rashid continues to celebrate Kashmir, love, and imagination — painting a world where creativity and resilience meet.
